KDE spell checking is broken (at least the German one)

Bug Description

Spell checking in KDE applications does not work properly or not at all. The global spell checking options in the systemsettings default to "German" instead of choosing one of the country-specific options like "German (Germany)". When I choose one of them, the "German" entry disappears. As a result, and because the global options are completely ignored by the applications, apps like Kopete where I can't find a dedicated spell checking configuration window don't do any spell checking. The console output says something like "No dictionary found for 'de' ". For Konqueror, I can use the spell check configuration window to set up the correct dictionary and it will work - but it ignores the global setting here, too. The same goes for KMail, but even if I manually set the dictionary there it does not work, and after restarting the message composer it falls back to the "German" dictionary - the setting is not stored.

This is Kubuntu 9.04 with all updates applied.

affects: ubuntu → kdebase-workspace (Ubuntu)

I just noticed that when I directly start KMail without Kontact running, the spell checking does work. I still have to set it each time I start the compose though as the setting does not get stored.

What about back-porting the fix to jaunty? I don't really want to update to a pre-alpha distribution.

At least it's good to know that I will have the fix in 4 months, too ;-)

I also don't think that this issues should be closed!

The bug still exists in the current 9.04 release.

The ticket should be reopened!

The thing is, we don't know what fixed it. Probably KDE 4.3. (Or the beta versions thereof)

I have Jaunty running on a fresh install with all updates including KDE 4.3. There the problem started for me. Before that I had Jaunty as an upgrade from hardy where it worked without problem. I would really appreciate this to be fixed in Jaunty, because I do not want to wait for Karmic or want to upgrade to unstable Karmic already.

I have this problem too. Just upgraded to Jaunty from Hardy. Migrated from kde3.5 to 4.2 and now 4.3.

If I reply to a mail my checker checks in Dutch. (I am in Belgium so I have Dutch, English and French). New mails are in Dutch. (My default is English.) It happens almost all the time. Occasionally not.

This is frustrating. Four months is a long wait! Is there a work around?

PS In this text box as I write this in Konqueror it is spelling in English!!!!

I think I have a workaround. I tried

sudo ispellconfig

and set the default language to English. Then restarted Kontact. It seems to be fine now. Will keep checking, but this is a simple work around.

My solution was to install ispell.
Kmail now uses the spelling checker.
