Bug Description

Using up-to-date jaunty kubuntu, but using the gnome nm-applet.

I have set up an OpenVPN connection via
"VPN connections -> Configure VPN connection -> (select VPN connection) -> Edit".

Now I change "Advanced -> Security -> HMAC Autherntication setting" to "MD-5". When I confirm the change by clicking OK and open the edit dialog again, the HMAC Authentication setting has returned to "Default".

I would expect it to save the setting "MD-5".

does this work better if you are using ubuntu-desktop? (e.g. use nm-applet)

Wow, curiously, it does.
Note, that also on the KDE desktop, I have used the GNOME "nm-applet", but it looks as though the behaviour depends on actually using the GNOME desktop.
Should I move the bug to kubuntu-desktop?

for now i would think its kde applets problem. Maybe you had both running when trying the gnome applet.

affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) → plasma-widget-network-manager (Ubuntu)

I have just filed bug #362747, in which I summarize all the problems in connecting OpenVPN under Kubutnu jaunty.

I don't think this is really a problem of the kde network manager plasmoid (which I did not have running while testing the nm-applet), but more a general problem of the GNOME applet when used in KDE4. Therefore I move the bug to kubuntu-meta.

affects: plasma-widget-network-manager (Ubuntu) → kubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)
summary: - nm-connection-editor forgets OpenVPN HMAC setting

Does this work when the NM plasma widget is not present?

Today, I tried to reproduce the bug - and I failed. I uninstalled the plasma widget, and started the GNOME nm-applet, and everything worked smoothly. And - surprise, surprise - even after I reinstalled the plasma widget, everything works fine when using the GNOME nm-applet. It doesn't loose any settings, and conection works wonderfully.

So finally, it looks as though there is again a way to connect to OpenVPN with kubuntu. Great!

I think this bug can be closed.
