Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

I updated my Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.1. When I booted it today the KDM login windows appeared, however it was configured to log in automatically. I type the username and password. KDE starts, but fades to black. I just see a black screen and the oxygen white cursor. I can note the task bar, if I right-click the menu seems like a white ghost. I also have gnome installed, for my luck it starts fine, I'm using it now.

Given that GNOME works, and that you're able to see the login screen, it sounds like X pretty much works. Guessing you have kwin enabled, so you should probably do some additional analysis around that.

Aloha piovisqui!

What you describe sounds like an issue with KWin's desktop acceleration (i.e. graphics 3D bling). This can either be caused by a specific configuration that exposed an issue in your driver/X, or by driver/X being changed in a way that either triggered an issue within KWin, or that KWin exposed an issue within the X stack that was there all along. In any case it appears to be obvious that the X update is at fault here.

Still, there is the possibility that we need to add your chip/driver to the blacklist, so KWin will not even try to use desktop effects. So, my question for now is: did desktop effects work before (e.g. did your windows have a drop shadow and did you get a fancy animation when you switched across virtual desktops).

Thanks in advance and have a nice day :)

@Bryce: Given that KDE doesn't work, wouldn't you think that this X update was ... of kind of low quality? ... I mean, just think about it - first KDE worked - then it didn't work - inbetween was an X update. Putting one and one together, I would say the update broke piovisqui's KDE, something an update shouldn't do if I am not mistaken.

Maybe I am completely wrong and miss the obvious, but shouldn't you consider the possibility and investigate?

@Harald, the patch only adjusts how X multi-head setups behave if using Xinerama, which the user has disabled in this case. I hope you noticed here the user is using the binary proprietary nvidia driver, and a version (180) that was not shipped for Intrepid.

Hey!

@Harald

I believe that's KWin. I'm using Gnome. Using the Compiz tray icon I switched the window manager from Metacity to KWin, the screen fade to black immediately. And I was using KWin with its effects, like the ALT+TAB and window preview. May I help with some debug info?

@Bryce|Harald

Any guess about why Kwin stop to work properly?

Following yours thoughts I checked my xorg.conf. I have no idea why, but is was modified:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Monitor "Configured Monitor"
        Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Just this. I ran nvidia-xconfig and it made the attached xorg.conf. Now when I start KDE it fades to white, then to black :D
Still the same problem.

Is this still an issue in KDE 4.2 or KDE 4.3?
