Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

All of my menu bar items disappeared along with the borders around windows. Work space switcher was at 2X2 but that was changed to 1X4. Switcher wouldn't work at all. Fixed everything by switching to no Visual Effects.

I think I am experiencing the same thing. In a 64bit jaunty installation. I cannot move any windows they all open and stay in the top left corner. Alt + tab does not work. All the borders are gone so windows cannot be resized, minimized or maximized. I am able to switch between windows from the window list on my panel although once briefly windows did not show up there either.

All this goes away if visual effects are set to none. Once when setting visual effects to normal I was logged out.

I have an integrated intel x3100 graphics card GMA965. In the past there have been many problems with this card and compiz/any graphics.

This started with an update in jaunty to compiz (I actually think the old compiz package was removed and a differently named one installed) a few days ago around when this bug was filed.

After upgrading to Alpha 6 I'm still experiencing the same problems. I'm also experienceing the same problems as Elias K Gardner. I had trouble logging in too. Had to log in via Gnome Failsafe. Then the log in problem was fixed.

Musashi are you still experiencing this bug?
Do you have the same graphics card as I do by any chance?

I had a theory that this might be related to uxe with my graphics card but I have discovered that uxe is not enabled in jaunty plus you have a different card Musashi. I just ran compiz in a terminal and immediately started having the same symptoms. Ive saved the terminal output and attached it here if its helpful to anyone. I see nothing interesting but don't know what to look for either.

Is there any information I can collect that would be helpful?

I fixed it with this command

sudo apt-get install compiz-gnome

I might have done some other things that allowed it to be fixed this way. Not sure why it works now or if it will keep working....
alt@LowWarr:~$ sudo apt-get remove compiz-gnome

This worked for me as well. You think compiz-gnome was not installed or
uninstalled somehow on our systems?

[This is an automatic notification.]

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

It seems likely to me this bug is gone; the -intel driver has improved immensely in Karmic and a lot of bugs are being reported as no longer present. So hopefully that's the case here too.
