Bug Description

After I updated from Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex, on which I was using an 2.25 version of Empathy from a PPA, to Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, on which I'm using the Empathy version from the official repositories, my MSN accounts no longer worked.
They do work in Pidgin, but when I start Empathy I get a message that there was a network connection error.

If you need any more information I'd be glad to provide it.

it's caused by python-msn due to python2.5->python2.6
try this
dpkg-reconfigure python-msn to make python-msn (pymsn) identified by python2.6

It's solved now. MSN works again in Empathy.

I'm also getting this error. `sudo dpkg-reconfigure python-msn` doesn't fix it for me, and I'm able to log in using the raw pymsn module, as described here:

http://madpython.com/pymsn/pymsn.client-module.html

For me, this is not a duplicate of bug #348752.

I hate to "me too" this bug but I agree, it is not a duplicate of #348752.

Msn works for me, about once per month in Empathy. Most of the time, even after reconfiguring the package as listed above, and after 'killall telepathy-butterfly", I just get a dropdown with "Network Error" in my contact list.

This hasn't worked for about 8 months now, so I'd say it's pretty important.

I think this bug is not a duplicate.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure python-msn simply told me that 'python-msn' was not installed. I installed it, and there was no change.

The only way I can sometimes persuade MSN to connect is to kill telepathy-butterfly and try again. It works sometimes.

Pidgin is very reliable - though trying to use both Pidgin and Empathy sometimes upsets Pidgin, and leads to lockouts sometimes due to failed login attempts (I had this with Yahoo tonight).

If you had telepathy-butterfly installed but not python-msn, it's probably that you have the newer version which now use python-papyon and not python-msn, and that make this bug entirely different. Please open a separate bug with butterfly and/or empathy logs if you can, the network error message is a generic error message so it doesn't us what the problem is

I have the same problem on a fresh install of Karmic.
Restarting empathy appears to fix it (temporarily)
