Binary package hint: update-notifier

Note: this is not a dup of bug #332945. This bug is about notifications, not icons.

With the new notification system in Jaunty there's no notification whatsoever of available updates. While the update-notifier icon may be confusing to users and clutter the systray, it's still useful to let people know updates are available. Here's some suggestion for the notification text:

There are X updates available. You may install then now by using System -> Administration -> Update Manager

This seems like it would work OK without getting in people's way. Combined with the weekly Update Manager "you should install updates now" notification we would have a way to escalate the notification of system updates.

Update-notifier does not work in Jaunty
In terminal I attemp to start it $sudo update-notifier
It is run, but not notificate about updates.
When run update manager it founds updates.

I have this problem too.
Furthermore update-notifier seems to be running (it's in the process list), but no visual notification is displayed!

Bug #332945 is about the notification area icon. This bug is asking for notification bubbles to appear. Obviously, these are related, but they are not the same.

Me too.

Ubuntu 10.04 x64 --> No notification by the update-notifier when updates are available. (the process update-notifier is running...). I have to manually check for updates.

Sorry, I don't understand this bug report. It would help if someone could provide exact steps to reproduce the problem. And instead of using the general term "notifications", please specify which notification mechanism you're referring to. Thanks!
