Bug Description

Please update Netbook launcher translations from Rosetta. I see a few "update translations" message in the bzr changelog, but in reality those are not fetching the newest translations from Rosetta:

https://translations.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-launcher

Also remember to upload new templates to Rosetta when necessary.

I see that trunk saw a commit "updating translations". However, the translations certainly did not come from https://translations.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-launcher, and are full of mistakes (at least the Finnish (fi) file).

Please download all PO files properly from Launchpad and update the translations.

The attribution in the PO files is also wrong.

The current shape of translations should not get released in any form. This also affects the 1.0 branch, if it's going to be used somewhere.

Hi,

I will be uploading translations that we completed for a large set of target languages for Jaunty for all UNR projects as soon as possible.

At that time, I will set the UNR projects to have their translations managed by Ubuntu Translators.

Cheers,
Kyle

Hi. I would inquire a few more things:

1. So you have bought translations for selected languages from an external party, or what?
2. Are you going to upload those translations to https://translations.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-launcher/trunk/+pots/netbook-launcher ?
3. Currently the .pot file available there misses at least the ”Desktop” string. Please update the template available for translators at Launchpad to match the code that is shipping.
4. For the languages you are not targetting, and since netbook-launcher (and others) are not available in Ubuntu main, only universe, can you do an upload of netbook-launcher with the translations downloaded from Launchpad, for 9.04?

I'm worried that I cannot recommend Netbook Remix in Finnish, if you don't fix 3., let translators translate the missing string (and others if there are some, but I have checked that if I manually take the current Launchpad translation into use, the only string I miss is that), and especially do 4. for the Ubuntu 9.04 release to replace the current bad translations in the package.

I think the new auto-import feature of LP Translations could help here: http://blog.launchpad.net/releases/launchpad-223-multiple-ppas-and-translation-imports-from-bazaar

Release Candidate is this Thursday, will the netbook-launcher translations be fixed for jaunty? I also proposed a branch to merge containing only Finnish translation fix (since I'm not aware what the "target" languages are which were supposed to be fixed somehow otherwise).

Kyle Nitzsche (knitzsche) wrote :

I have been communicating with the developer of this package regarding the time frame for integration of LP translations for launcher into Jaunty. This work will occur this week, in time for Jaunty inclusion.

Please note:

Public/LP translations for the launcher were started initially by simply uploading the pot file to LP. No po files were uploaded, yet po files do exist for a large number of languages. This means there is now no structured means of reviewing of LP translations, which unfortunately means we have no idea what LP done translations actually are. But we do have the existing po files that, while possibly imperfect, were done initially by professional translators, and thus they have a presumed high level of quality.

Therefore, I will merge current LP translations into the existing po files in a manner that gives priority to existing translations this time around. Unfortunately, any errors that may exist in existing translations will continue to exist for the time being. However, the plan for using Ubuntu Translators group to oversee this and other UNR packages is forming and will be implemented soon, thus providing a necessary degree of quality control for LP translations down the road and opening up translations to the community.

So, if the pending merge results in your particular translations not showing up in Jaunty, please be patient and use the soon-to-come structured translation approach to suggest your translations again.

I apologize if this has created some confusion, but it derives from the origins of this package (and other UNR packages) and a somewhat bumpy transition to LP and full community engagement.

Thanks for the detailed response, and I look forward to bringing netbook-launcher to the hands of Ubuntu translators for real.

Unfortunately professional translators do not necessarily do a better job than organized long-time hobbyist FLOSS translators, as can be seen here. This is especially true for more minor languages, where the buyer does not have competence to evaluate the quality of the resulting translations (just see Samsung / Motorola phones in Finnish... terrible job).

(it's a bit same as saying that proprietary software is better than FLOSS as proprietary software is done by "professionals" ;) )

Hi Timo.

It's great that you are so actively involved in this!

Just to be clear, I did not mean imply that professional translations are better in any way than community translations. I only meant that there is no structured review in place right now for community done launcher translations, and therefore there is no way I can evaluate whether they are all valid. We must therefore use the paid-for translations this time, and we look forward to fully involving the community in the near term.

Cheers - Kyle

The Spanish translation translates "Network" as "Rojo". I guess it is a double translation from "Network" to "Red", and then Red (Spanish for network) gets translated again to "Rojo". Really funny, and revealing of the translation quality.

Santiago, thanks, I've fix this in the bzr trunk branch.

I also wish UNR would move its sources to Rosetta in the future, but I'm not sure it's a reasonnable change for Jaunty at this point.

The "Rojo" mistake was also reported in bug #358641 which alone is good ground for a SRU.

Reporting there's a mistake on "Videos" folder name for Spanish translations.

Current text: "Vídeos"
Proper text: "Videos" -- Without acute accent

I believe its due to not using the Rosetta translations wich I hope can be fixed for jaunty-updates too.

If it isn't, should I post a new bug Loïc so it can make it as the current way wo/Rosetta?

Loïc Minier (lool) wrote :

Yes; it's best to report bugs against translations in separate report still as the translations are currently managed outside of Rosetta.

@JuanHoyos:
What? "Vídeos" is already the proper translation! At least it is in European Spanish (es-ES). Please do not remove the acute accent from "Vídeos". That's the correct spelling.
