Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I'm having trouble getting my 8.10 system to work with an ATI graphics card.

I've been using this page to drive my work:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

And my goal is to install the open source drivers, get them fully working, and drive my system with two monitors, at different resolutions.

Here is the hardware I've got:

* ASUS P5Q-EM motherboard (Intel G45)
* HIS Radeon HD 4650 512MB graphics card

As recommended by the above web page, I've verified what lspci says about the graphics card:

$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650] [1002:9498]
$

Also as recommended, I have removed the flgrx driver completely:

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx
[sudo] password for jeffp:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package xorg-driver-fglrx is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
$

And I have verified that the client glx vendor string is not ATI:

$ glxinfo |grep vendor
server glx vendor string: SGI
client glx vendor string: SGI
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
$

And I have installed the mesa drivers as specified. For this log, I ran it again:

$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-driReading package lists... Done

My xorg.conf file (attached) seems right to get a single display going, but that doesn't happen except in a rather ugly default graphics mode.

I think the problem is that the open source ATI driver is not recognizing my graphics card at all, despite the fact that the web page listed above explicitly states

        2D modesetting only

        HD 3xxx / R600 based cards
        HD 4xxx / R700 based cards

the Xorg.0.log file that makes me think that my card isn't recognized is attached.

I sure could use some help. Right now I've got this fancy new computer that's pretty much only useful as a door stop.

Please advise on anything I can do. My kernel skills are pretty limited, but I'll do my best.

Thanks!

Jeff Powell

Hi Jeff,

Despite what the man page indicates, you can see that your HW is not listed in the Xorg.0.log. I believe 4650's aren't supported in 6.11.0. I have a snapshot deb of 6.12.0 in my ppa you're welcomed to try, although I don't know if that deb alone is sufficient to make it work. Would be useful to have your feedback in either case.

Well, that is disappointing.

Does anyone know if the 4650 will be supported in Ubuntu 9.04?

As for testing with your 6.12.0 version, I honestly wouldn't know where to start. If there are instructions available somewhere for what I'd have to copy and/or install on my vanilla Ubuntu 8.10 system to work with what you're describing, I might be willing, but with just that much info I am totally lost.

Also, I should ask about the fglrx driver. I tried installing that before reporting this problem and had no luck with that either. Is it the case that the version of that available through ubuntu is also old enough that it doesn't support the 4650? I'm a bit confused there because I found this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/325431

before I submitted my own.

9.04 is only a month (or 3) away, I suppose. But time will tell, and that only matters if that release will support the 4650.

Thanks very much for your help. As I say, if there are instructions or something that will help me test with the new version of things you're describing, I'll try it.

Bug 325431 confirms that r4650 cards are working on Jaunty, even with 6.11.0 (which I wasn't sure of before).

Intrepid is using 6.9.0, which sounds like it is too old to support this chip. Alpha versions of Jaunty are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/, you probably want to upgrade if you want to use this newer card.
