Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I have just installed Jaunty Alpha 4 on my laptop. The touchpad wouldn't work in the installed system or the liveCD. It turned out that the package xserver-xorg-input-synaptics was not installed, and installing it fixed the problem. But surely the package should have been installed in the first place?

I'm not sure if ubiquity is to blame here, or if a problem during the liveCD startup prevented the detection of the touchpad (I restarted the liveCD a couple of times to double-check, so I think it's entirely reproducible), or if the package is simply not included with the default install.

It was clearly stated in the known issues of alpha4 (http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/jaunty/alpha4#Known%20Issues) that the package is not included.
I myself consider that a stupid decision, because the live cd is the primary way to promote ubuntu (and overall kubuntu with the fresh new kde 4.2) but if the touchpad doesn't work, all you can get from your parent/friend/clients is a bad feedback. I hope there was a very good technical reason to not include that driver, and I hope it will be included in the next alpha release.
Bye all.

I would think this is a genuine packaging error rather than a concious decision; removing this package is a clearly a very poor solution for reducing the size of the liveCD --especially considering the .deb is just 68KiB.

Hopefully this will be fixed for alpha 5?
