Bug Description

While trying to have freq scaling with a Celeron M, I found that only p4-clockmod could be used. And I discovered this comment in /usr/share/powernowd/cpufreq-detect.sh :
 # Disabled for now - the latency tends to be bad enough to make it
        # fairly pointless.
        # echo "FREQDRIVER=p4-clockmod" >/etc/default/powernowd
        # to override this

This should be present in the Readme in order to be found.
By the way, even if they are latencies, with an appropriate setting, it could save some battery time without sacrifying performances. It could be a good thing to have it enabled for a laptop.

I'll add this to the README.Debian in the new version.

I suggest that you could allow the module to be loaded but disable the powernowd frequency modulation.

I use the p4_clockmod module with the cpufreq-applet in gnome, allowing me to set (and watch) the CPU frequency to any value I want, and think that this is better that no frequency scalling allowed.

I'm marking this report back to "Confirmed" because it's "In progress" with no assignee for more than 2 years and README.Debian has not been updated. Thanks for your time.

The powernowd package is obsolete, please do not use it. CPU frequency scaling is now handled by the kernel, so if you still have issues on a modern release, file a bug against the linux package.

This is not an appropriate way to declare a package "obsolete". If you think a package should not be used, file a bug to get it removed from the archive and *then* invalidate the bugs.
