Bug Description

AFAIK Kooka is the only GUI OCR software shipping with Ubuntu. With Ubuntu 8.10, it seems to have gone: When you type "Kooka" into Synaptics' search field, you get no results. Same when you try to search in the built-in applications catalogue (Anwendungen -> Hinzufügen/Entfernen).

Kooka was dropped from the kdegraphics module for KDE 4. The reason for this is the lack of active development and maintenance for long time.
However, there have been discussions around that, for example around this dot.kde.org story.

It was somebody speaking up interested in carrying on Kooka development. If you are a friend of Kooka, cross fingers, might be that development continues.

Actually I consider skanlite the future.
Kooka really needs a rewrite anyway, there are some design flaws from what I heared.

Skanlite is DEFINITELY no alternative, because it has not OCR option:

Thing is that without Kooka, there is not a single GUI OCR program in Ubuntu NOW.
