At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Are you able to reproduce this?
Are you talking about gnome-terminal (The one that starts if you press alt+f2 and enter gnome-terminal)?

What happens if you enter "reset<enter>" when your terminal is blank?

greetings

Martin

Hi,
Thanks for your prompt response. Here's some detail
I've Kubuntu 8.10 which i upgraded to JJ 9.01.
1. After OS upgrade, avant window navigator app crashed possibly due to lack of support in 9.01, following which konsole started behaving weirdly.
2. I've konsole (KDE terminal and not gnome-terminal) and I had expected it to work normally even though avant crashed.
3. KDE crashed subsequently and even after logging back in konsole was broken. I had to bring up a new instance.
Yes, it happened few times. I didn't try entering "reset" as i couldn't see anything on konsole, no prompt, no cursor, so was not sure it could really accept any input.
Thanks again,
Murali.

KDE use Konsole and also the title says Konsole not gnome-terminal, reassigning the bug. thanks.

Basically konsole doesn't like the session info and doesn't construct any views, leaving a blank window and a potential crash.
I sense many dupes in the future of this bug.

See backtrace on bug 323799. I also experience this issue on Intrepid, same behavior as described by John Thomas and Ralph Janke.

I can also confirm an empty screen when starting konsole, but my konsole does not crash when closing the window.

My .xsession-errors shows the following when attempting to start konsole:

konsole(18828) Konsole::Pty::flowControlEnabled: Unable to get flow control status, terminal not connected.
konsole(18828): Attempt to use QAction "change-profile" with KXMLGUIFactory!
konsole(18828) Konsole::Pty::start: Unable to set terminal attributes.
kwin: X Error (error: <unknown>[DAMAGE+0], request: XDamageDestroy[DAMAGE+2], resource: 0x1403973)

I've upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 via adept. The issue occurs both for a existing users home and a brand new created home directory, too.

I confirm the behavior and output as described by Stefan Draheim. I'll also updated from 8.10 to 9.04 via adapt-manager.

Don't know if this helps but I got it working by reinstalling udev and running manually init.d script mountdevsubfs.sh as a super-user.
