i am pretty sure if you try as root there will not be any problem !

burning operation is a typical costly operation( writing to a block devices is slow ) .
Also it's kinda real time operation as buffers needs to be flushed immediately(reading from the file and flushing/burning
to a cd)so the process requires higher priority at any cost which is best done by a process started by root .

so in my view if you do that as root , like sudo k3b and then try the burning operation it should work.

This problem occurs with kde 4.4.2 and 4.4.3. I also have this problem when running k3b as root.
I don't have this problem with kubuntu 8.04.

K3b failed writing multisession project - kubuntu 10.04 with kde 4.4.3

Writing DVD-R in incremental mode
Using wodim 1.1.10
Unmounting medium
Starting incremental sequential writing at 16x speed
cdrecord has no permission to open the device
You may use K3bsetup to solve this problem
