Thank you for your bug report!

I'd like a little bit more information in order to help you.

Can you please tell me the output of running "deja-dup --version" in a terminal?

Can you please try running "DEJA_DUP_DEBUG=1 deja-dup >/tmp/debug.txt 2>&1", trying the same backup, and attach the file /tmp/debug.txt to this bug?

Changed in deja-dup:

status: New → Incomplete

Yikes! Sorry to make you upload a 68M file. :)

Alright, I'm looking at it.

It seems like the filename used for the first backup file was invalid (see last 50 lines of debug.txt). What file system is on the external disk? FAT32?

I just saw that the file system is FAT32 and soes it need to be NTFS to
work?
Sorry to give you all this problem.

Not your fault. If Déjà Dup doesn't work on FAT32/NTFS, it's a bug in Déjà Dup, not you. :)

I don't know if it makes a difference or not to have NTFS vs FAT. I will do some testing with FAT32 and NTFS to see. I hadn't tested that yet. :-/

So, yeah, after testing, I believe that the colon character that duplicity normally tries to use is illegal on FAT partitions. I'll add code to check if we get that error and if so, to try again with the --short-filenames argument to duplicity.

Fix committed to bzr trunk. If our initial backup attempt fails, we switch to --short-filenames before giving up.

Is this bug back?

I spent hours today trying to get my backup to work over SSH. I thought there was some SSH issues because the debug log showed that the SFTP would fail each time. On a whim I formatted the drive from FAT32 to EXT3 which completely fixed the problem.

I was also doing a backup to an external USB drive. However, my error message was always in English and would say "Failed for unkown reason"

Using deja-dup 22.0

Would have edited previous comment, but I couldn't find that option.
