Bug Description

Binary package hint: cheese

For me, Cheese worked perfectly on Gutsy. It was very slow on Hardy. Now it works no more on Intrepid.
Its behaviour is never the same exactly. Once, it shows the Gnome foot moving its fingers for ever. Once it shows a blank window. Once the test pattern. Clicking on the effects button freezes the window and the process must be forced to terminate, etc...

Would it be possible for you both, to add as attachment to this bug report the output from the following commands?

cheese -v
lsusb
lsmod
uname -a

Today, Cheese works. Perhaps, an update occured since last time. I don't remember. But there is still a big delay between the object move and the image move. At least 1 s or so.

Try having the following script running on a terminal window before you launch cheese.

while true; do echo > /dev/null; done

If your computer is anything like mine, cheese will behave much better when that script is running.

Without that script running, initializing the camera takes so long that cheese often seems to gives up on it and default to the gstreamer test screen (color bars and tv noise in the corner). Even in the cases the camera initialization completes, the frame rate afterwards is ridiculously slow, with tens of seconds between frames. All those problems magically disappear when the script above is running, and return as soon as I kill the script.

I confirm this bug. I am using a Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks with Jaunty on an HP xw4600 workstation. The camera works fine in other applications (Skype, guvcview). I always see one of the following behaviors.

1. The throbber throbs for awhile and then stops. During the throbbing I see that the camera is being probed for frame rates, capture sizes, etc. Once the throbbing stops, I am left with a blank image area. There is no "no webcam" message.

2. The throbber throbs. When the throbber stops, the video area shows the SMPTE test pattern. Again, there is no "no webcam" message.

3. The same as (2), except that the "no webcam" message actually does appear. This appears to be the rarest of these four cases.

4. The throbber throbs and then the camera works.

Sometimes, in the case of scenario (1), I can get the camera to work by going to preferences and changing the image size. If this does not work, a second attempt to change the video size will lock up the application.

I have tried the script running in a terminal as suggested in the comment of 2009-04-21, and this does not seem to make any difference. Doing cheese -v -gst-debug-level=3 only yields the warnings in the attached text file.

In general, when I have these problems I can successfully launch the web camera with the command:

gst-launch v4l2src ! 'image/x-raw-yuv,width=640,height=480,framerate=30/1' ! gconfvideosink.

I have tested it and it appears to be working. I no longer have access
to the original camera I used to test this, but it does work with a
different camera.

Thanks and regards,
