Bug Description

A fresh install of Intrepid server from CD (downloaded from ubuntu.com) fails to boot after installation on Dell PowerEdge 2650 using an onboard PERC 3/Di controller. All hardware firmware at the latest levels (System BIOS Rev A21, PERC 3/Di rev 7692). Disk details: 2 x 36GB (configured as PERC RAID 1 container), 3 x 73GB (configured as PERC RAID 5 container).

No errors are given at all during boot but grub screen/text never appears. System sits with a flashing cursor and never continues (I left it for a good 10 minutes). I have tried the kernel boot option (aic7XXX=no_probe) but still no luck.

I have tried this on several 2650's all with the same result using Intrepid. Strange thing is during the installation it prompts to say that the machine has a Serial ATA RAID controller (which it doesn't) and asks if it should be enabled. I have tried responding both yes and no and neither seems to make a difference.

A fresh install of Hardy server works on the same servers though so seems to be a problem related to Intrepid only.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

New to this was a resolution available on this? We are running into the same exact issue?

Just curious if anyone would be willing to test the latest pre-release of Jaunty 9.04 (currently Alpha4) to see if this issue remains? Jaunty contains a newer 2.6.28 based kernel. Jaunty Alpha5 will also be released in the next few days so you may want to wait to test - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . Please let us know your results. Thanks.

I tried this on a PowerEdge 2650 and I this definitely is a timeout issue, please edit your grub boot line and add rootdelay=60, So in your grub file this will be something like:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-server root=UUID=e490XXXXXXXXXXXXblahblahXXXX ro rootdelay=60 quiet splash

I think this has to do with the Embedded AIC-7899 SCSI controller.

Having the exact same issue on a Compaq/HP DL 380 with a Compaq Computer Corporation Smart Array 64xx (rev 01) card. Running "/usr/sbin/grub-install /dev/cciss/c0d0" from a rescue cd fixed it for me.

Can you confirm this issue exists with the Karmic Alpha 9.10 release. Images for testing are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . Please let us know your results.

If the issue remains while still running Karmic, please run the following command which will automatically gather and attach updated debug information:

apport-collect -p linux <bug #>

Closing this bug for now as wontfix.

Thanks in advance.
