Bug Description

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 in two ways:
* upgrade from 8.04
* fresh install
on three different systems.

On all three there was no icon for nm-applet even though the process was running.
If I want to create a new GSM, PPPoE or other type of network I have to click arround near the notification area ... maybe maybe I find the place where nm-applet's icon should be.

Killing nm-applet and restarting it will not make the icon appear.
I could only see it if there was a wireless signal nearby: nm-applet displayed an animated icon.

Expected: A default icon I can click on to see the applet.

Same here on a HP Compaq 6510b!
I can't see the symbol and I can't find any menu by clicking in the notification area.

When I kill the nm-applet and restart it, the only thing happens is:

--
root@acidicX-HP:~# killall nm-applet
root@acidicX-HP:~# nm-applet

** (nm-applet:26491): WARNING **: No connections defined
--

Since I am now going to upgrade on my desktop system, I'll see if the same bug is also present there.

short edit - disabling compiz effects won't solve it..

I also have this problem. My static IP wired connection is configured via /etc/network/interfaces, and wireless connection is managed by NM. nm-applet is running, no icon is visible, but the dropdown menu can be accessed by luckily clicking the notification area.

I have to add a me to here.

my interfaces file is
------------------------------
auto lo br0

iface lo inet loopback

iface br0 inet dhcp
 bridge_ports eth0 wired

iface wired inet manual

iface br_usb inet manual
 bridge_ports eth_usb

iface eth_usb inet manual
-------------------------
no mention of the wireless interface here but I still see no network manager icon in the notification area.

I had a problem where the network manager applet was not present. It turned out to be related to https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-keyring/+bug/162710 where nm-applet was screwed up due to changing my login password. Perhaps that will help others.
