Bug Description

Binary package hint: abiword

Using Intrepid Xubuntu 8.10 daily and daily-live CD's, after installation, abiword does not identify any mispelled words during spell checking.

This is Xubuntu Intrepid-alternate-i386.iso dated 2008-10-14 and Xubuntu intrepid-desktop-i386.iso dated 2008-10-15

Abiword version 2.6

1. Opened /usr/share/abiword-2.6/readme.abw
2. Change the spelling of any word; for example, "About" to "Aboot" and "the" to "teh"
3. Select Tools -> Spell check
4. Note the message "Spellcheck completed"
5. This happens if the file is saved to your /home directory or not.

Expected results:
Spellchecker should find the misspelled word.

I am attaching the screenshots of the spellchecker.

I can't confirm this on my intrepid desktop installation, spell check is working properly for me.

Well, this appears to be related to the specific document. Using another document which I created previoulsy, spell checking worked as expected. Using /usr/share/abiword-2.6/readme.abw spell checking fails to check the document. This can be reproduced using the document in /usr/share/abiword-2.6/readme.abw instead of another document.

Hi, tried the same and found the following:
After opening the document there is no document-language set (-none- is displayed in the indicator field at the bottom, right). You have to select the complete text and select "English" instead of "(non-proofing)" from the language list in the Tools -> Set-Language menu. After closing the dialog everything works as expected.

But I haven't found an Option to set the default language of new documents to anything else than the system (GNOME) language. Anyone knows a way to do it?

The default language of all documents is changed per http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10606#c3 :
"The "Default Language" option in the Set Language dialog is for setting the
default language for new text in that document, not for setting the default
language for AbiWord. It should be detecting your language based on your
keyboard layout, but you can override this by uncheckin a box to that effect in
Preferences. You then have the option of opening "normal.awt" and changing the
default language there, which will have the result you expect."

Since spell checking is working with the final release of Xubuntu 8.10, I am closing this bug report.
