Bug Description

Binary package hint: adept

I'm using Kubuntu intrepid beta on 64bit, all packages are up-to-date (more details see below).

When I start the adept manager, I would expect a complete package list in the search tab, as all "State" and "Requested" flags are turned on.

Instead, package list in the search tab is completely empty. Only when I *deselect* "Show packages marked for upgrade", I get a list of packages that seems complete to me.

This might be a duplicate of bug #279332, however, due to the "compact" description of that bug, I cannot be sure.

A browsing mode is something that mornfall was looking at implementing in 3.1.
I think the fact that you can semi-browse the packages by fooling with the statuses is an unintended yet handy side effect. ;-)

Sorry? I do not understand your comment.

Probably I didn't express myself clear enough. What I described above is a bug, not something for the wishlist - or I didn't understand the logic of the flags.

I try to explain again, and add two screenshots:

1. When I open up the adept manager and choose the Search tab, I get a completely empty list - even though *all* "State" and "Requested" flags are turned on (i.e. they are not greyed out). The attached screenshot shows how adept looks for me when opened.
To my understanding, the list should display *all* available packages in this state.

2. Only when I *deselect* the "Show packages marked for upgrade" of the "Requested" flags, I get a list of all packages. This is documented by the second screenshot. Note, that the only difference to the first screenshot is, that the "Show packages marked for upgrade" flag is turned off.
To my understanding, the list should now display all packages, with the exception of the packages that were marked for upgrade. This is actually what happens.

Therefore, I think something is broken with the logic of the "Show packages marked for upgrade" flag.

I agree with Olaf .. we find this very confusing. In fact we found beta2 to be almost unusable (testing Intrepid 32-bit on a Compaq Evo laptop). I'm reserving judgement until we get to look at Beta 4, sincerly hope that brings some sanity back. (Can't test right now, the laptop has gone to a weekend conference!)

I want to point out this bug for reconsideration again: I think that this is nothing for the wishlist, but a relatively severe usability bug.
How about setting it to at least low or medium priority?

Unfortunately, Adept has been unmaintained by its original authors for several years, and nobody has stepped up to continue its development. (Though the Muon Suite is arguably its spiritual successor) As such, Adept has been removed from releases of Kubuntu from 12.10 onwards, and no additional improvements will be made to the software.

We thank you for reporting this bug all the same, and apologize for taking so long to respond to it.
