Can't burn DVD disks

Bug Description

I did upgrade to Ubuntu Intrepid recently. When I try to burn dvd disk something goes wrong and I get general error from nautilus burning tool. I can't tell what is exactly wrong - dmesg might be interesting, I also attached other information (lspci, lshw). Burning CD works fine. Sometimes after failure with DVD disk (second try with the same disk), it looks like there was something recorded on it, but the recorded size doesn't match recorded data - one small file versus thick ring on DVD disk. I suspect that there's something wrong with dvd recording software.

uname -a:
Linux sagittarius 2.6.27-4-generic #1 SMP Wed Sep 24 01:29:06 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

hardware:
Benq P52 laptop, amd64, ATI SB400 chipset, sata (1 disk) + pata (1 recorder as primary master works as emulated scsi) - both work as scsi (sdaX, sr0).

thank you for your bug report, could you run gconf-editor, go to apps, nautilus-cd-burner, enable the debug option there and then run nautilus-cd-burner on a command line and try to burn a DVD and copy the log to the bug?

does using the indicated command line work correctly? that seems to be a dvd+rw-tools issue or a linux one

Running the command alone results in the same error (there's nothing written on DVD disk).

The drive itself behaves strange - for a minute or two head goes back and forward inside the DVD. Blank DVD disk itself is recognized correctly and it does work on Windows; sometimes it takes some time, probably due to fact that Linux leaves the drive in undefined state which after soft reset, renders the drive unusable (partly).

reassigning to linux that seems to be a driver bug rather

Hi lukasz-goralczyk,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/)

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 275859

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

im driving a 8.04 ubuntu and had no problems with my dvd burner for some hundreds of discs. But now there is an issue since some weeks, where no burning remains successful. i changed the media to exclude an incompatibility with that but this had no effect.

uname -a
Linux ICEBURNER 2.6.24-26-generic #1 SMP Tue Dec 1 18:37:31 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

i think its araised with one of the newer kernels, because i have some other pc's with ubuntu 8.04 and one with 9.10. It is not fact that all my hardware is defect, please guide me thru a process of investigating the reasons.

Hardware is fine. Loss of functionality coincided with dist upgrade.
