Bug Description

there is no linux-restricted-modules package for the lpia flavour, the ath5k driver does not work on all hardware yet, so either madwifi support needs to be included through l-r-m or the ath5k driver needs to be fixed to support hardware like i.e. used on teh samsung Q1 ultra MID

Oliver, are you talking about a 2.6.26 or a 2.6.27 kernel? With the recent update to the 2.6.27 kernel the ath5k drivers works for me (didn't work on 2.6.26) and should work for most cards AFAIK.
(Not including lspci output or anything since I don't think that's particularly relevant right now).

i'm talking about 2.6.27 on a samsung Q1 Ultra (which is one of the development platforms we use in the ubuntu mobile team), do you see it working with lpia kernel on this device ?
it uses an AR242x 802.11abg chipset ...

Johannes,
What hardware are you using? What chipset? This is with the lpia kernel?

Emmet, sorry for the delayed response, I missed subscribing to this bug.
1) Machine is an Acer Aspire One 150L.
2) lspci -v:
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. Device e008
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
 Memory at 55200000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [50] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit- Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [60] Express Legacy Endpoint, MSI 00
 Capabilities: [90] MSI-X: Enable- Mask- TabSize=1
Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting <?>
 Capabilities: [140] Virtual Channel <?>
 Kernel modules: ath5k
(Hm, that would be the same as on the Q1 Ultra)
3) Yes, the kernel is an lpia one, 2.6.27-3-lpia

I haven't done extensive testing though other than bringing the device up and checking that I can see access points.

If I can help with anything, I'll be glad to do so. (One note though: I'm running intrepid-lpia on a netbook which I figure is a rather exotic installation at the moment since the installer didn't even know about the lpia arch when I installed it a couple of weeks ago. The Ubuntu mobile team in contrast is working on the hardy version as far as I know).

please try to connect ... i can see all acesspoints as well here (on -generic with teh ubuntu-mobile image though) but it fails to establish the connection, afaik teh behavior on lpia is similar

I had some time around a hotspot today to do some testing. I was able to connect to the AP, get an IP assigned and talk to the DNS (I didn't get further than that due to time constrains and me being relatively inexperienced in terms of routing tables and whatnot, also firestarter/iptables probably blocked attempts to fetch webpages). This was done using the ath5k module. I tested this with the madwifi driver too and got the same results. I'll be around another hotspot during the weekend with more time for testing, so if you want me to do more testing let me know.

what encryption type did that hotspot use ? i see the issue with WEP and head from many others that use WPA fr which it didnt work as well on different devices

None. The access point I'll be at on the weekend will likely have WEP or WPA. Any point in testing there?

Oh well, I guess there's not much of a point for me doing more testing since I have the same card as you guys, other people reported on this already and me not really being knowledgeable about wifi things, encryption in particular.
