Bug Description

Binary package hint: 915resolution

Hello!

I noticed package 915resolution is no longer present in Intrepid. I'm not sure why that is, but I suspect it's because the new Intel driver for xorg does not need it anymore for setting video modes.

Unfortunately, the uvesafb driver (which is the standard for the console in Intrepid) has the same limitation as older versions of the xorg driver, namely it can only set video modes defined by the video BIOS. For displays with other resolutions (e.g., widescreen laptops), 915resolution is still needed.

I'm struggling with this problem for a Fujitsu P1610 also - 915resolution is hard to get hold of.

I found some instructions with a downloaded version, thought I'd finished and found after a reboot it needed the package again. Now struggling to find the same instructions. Be very useful to include in Intrepid.

I assumed that Intrepid had included a fix for the intel chip bug that 915resolution solved, so I updated to 8.10 but sadly 915resolution is stilled needed as on attempting to play a couple of web based games I found the screen play is very, very slow and the tool bars and text have a colour issue or simply don't display at all..... which is rather sad as 8.04 with the 915resolution repository worked very will.... the hardest part of all is having to go back to using XP for these games
I'm using a Dell Optiplex 170L
