Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt-listbugs

Hi,

apt-listbugs is not very useful in Ubuntu, as the bug reports it shows
may or may not be relevant to the version of the package that it
is installing. This leads to confusion for users, for example
bug 42673 and its 4 duplicates.

It also doesn't interact well with Ubuntu's default upgrade method,
according to bug 62720.

I asked for opposition to this removal in

  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-motu/2008-September/004747.html

and received no opposition.

Please also blacklist the package.

If anyone proposes a modified package that works better on Ubuntu at a later
date it will be welcome back to the archive in my opinion, however, I don't
believe it should be available in it's current state.

Thanks,

James

WOW guys apt-listbugs is critical package.
Just because stable servers don't track the latest releases. And wait until the releases is stabilized
doesn't mean they don't use ubuntu.

I rely on apt-listbugs for my testing of upcoming pre-release. It
seams ubuntu has removed apt-listbugs from the main package list. This
makes so I can NOT safely install pre-releases. Upgrading ubuntu
severs is always a dicey afair for me. I NEVER upgrade ubuntu as one
shot upgrade. It is risk I simply can not take on servers.

FINE!! What needs to be done to make apt-listbugs refer to ubuntu bugs?

How much difference is there between ubuntu and debian outside of main?

apt-listchanges also refers to debian from my understanding and it is
less important than apt-listbugs.

apt-listbugs is used by server upgrade scripts to PREVENT / WARN of
potentially dangerous upgrades.

For the time being I have manually pulled debian's apt-listbugs and
installed it. It still reports of potentially dangerous "debian"
upgrades.

I'm not sure I'd oppose removal, but even seeing Debian bugs for a given package on Ubuntu is useful to me. I run both systems and it's nice to have an integrated bug lookup. This really is more useful for those following testing/sid, but is also useful when deciding whether to install a new package on any system. Ideally it would check a merged upstream database.

rc-alert from devscripts is similarly handicapped, but still worth running. It's target audience is developers, and fixing Debian (usually upstream) on packages you use is certainly nice.

What is the status on launchpad package version bug tracking?

I currently used debian almost exclusive on servers and ubuntu on desktops.
I am not happy about that, but it will stay that way until ubuntu bug tracking
integration is fixed.
