Bug Description

Hello friends, I'm using Hardy Heron 8.04.1, Linux kernel version 2.6.24-19-generic. My machine is a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop with 2x Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83GHz Processor, and 2GB of Ram (I'm herewith attaching a full specs of my machine generated using the tool HardInfo). Here goes my problem.

I'm running firefox and totem now. My System Monitor shows a cpu usage of 30% in both of my processors. I was running on AC power when my cpu showed 30%. Now when i unplug the ac power, and run on battery power, my system monitor shows both cpu usage as 60%. I did the same thing for almost ten times and am finding the same thing. This is the most peculiar problem which one can encounter. Please find me a solution for this as increased cpu load in battery mode means more battery power consumption which is not good.

Thanks for your bug report.

Could you please run either "top" in a terminal or "System -> Administration -> System Monitor (and sort on cpu)" and attempt to identify which processes are using most cpu when you switch from power to battery.

Hello, I ran top with and without the battery and i'm attaching a full screen shot of the top command with and without battery. You can refer to those two screen shots which i'm attaching. Thank you

I also want to add one more thing. When running on battery power i'd mentioned that the cpu usage shoots up. Now when I plug my AC power back, the cpu usage drops down back to the previous value

This isn't a Firefox bug as much as it is acpi. fire fox does use a bit more cpu% than most apps but since you were running 2 apps and they both went up when you unpluged the ac/dc than its more battery or acpi. firefox isnt going to change just because you unplug laptop

I've been trying to replicate this. Sometimes I get a percentage increase and sometimes a percentage decrease. However both of these are within +/- 10% either side.

sanath: are there any particular pages (eg. was it something showing a flash movie in firefox, or which URL was it?) and for the video (totem instance) you mentioned, how large was the video and in which format? (Most of the actual video scaling part is done by a hardware scaler so should not appear to make any difference to the CPU level).
