Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Spawned from bug 144077.

On a "default" Intrepid system, using the 'ati' driver, Desktop Effects cannot be enabled.

1. Go to System > Preferences > Appearance.
2. Click on the Desktop Effects tab.
3. Select Normal.
4. Error message (after flickering of switching window managers): "Desktop effects could not be enabled."

Hmmm. Not so sure if it's a correct duplicate. Just to put my 2 cents in, I had the same exact problem, and solved it thanks to this post:

simply ticking off the key /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager with gconf-editor let my ati card (using fglrx) enable visual effects again.

Romano, you don't have the "same exact problem" since you are using fglrx. Andrew (and everybody else here) is using the default -ati driver.
