Init 1 asks for root password

Bug Description

In Kubuntu 5.10: Upon entering runlevel 1 I am asked for the root password, which
should not exist in Ubuntu. The first user password is not accepted.

Ubuntu gives me the option of pressing Control-D to continue, but this takes me to
runlevel 2, which does not appear to be any lighter than runlevel 5 - in Kubuntu kdm
runs in runlevel 2.

Do you have a password set for the root user, or have you set a password and
subsequently locked the account?

Hmm, I may have set the root password and then deleted it. I didn't have a root when I reported
this bug. Since then I have added a root password since I use recovery mode quite often.
