Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Using default sound configuration, I had no audio using Pidgin, system sounds configuration or Totem. Checked all volume levels. After switching from Pulseaudio to ALSA, all sound works fine.

See attached for detailed output suggested on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

Pulseaudio version: 0.9.10-2ubuntu1
Ubuntu release: Intrepid Alpha1 (Same problem on fresh install of Alpha2)

wanted to add the when GDM comes up after booting, I can hear the GDM sound. But then after logging in, I don't hear the "Log in" sound. maybe this helps.

not the same issue here but similar... I suppose GDM uses ALSA that is working fine with kernel 2.6.26, but PulseAudio not: here, after logon, Gnome is using PulseAudio (HDA Intel driver) reproducing lots of noises and scratchy sounds.

Excatly same issue here as what Andreas is seeing, first and last sound on pulse is when GDM pops up. It used to work on intrepid say last fridayish.

Looks like it's driver issue, works in 2.6.24-19-generic but not in 2.6.26-3-generic or 2.6.26-2-generic.
In all cases sound card 0 is HDA Intel, seen perfectly in alsamixer too.

It looks like PulseAudio is choosing the PC Speaker over the "ALSA PCM on front:0 (AD198x Analog) via DMA" sink/output. This does not happen in 2.6.24, but it does happen in 2.6.26-4.
