Here is the most recent Ubuntu entry in debian/chnagelog:
sdl-stretch (0.2.3-8ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low
* debian/
- doc/make-doc.py: Add file encoding to make python 2.5 happy
(fixes FTBFS).

The only significant change was adding the file encoding in debian/

The only other Ubuntu change, modifying the maintainer field, can be safely dropped. This allows us to perform a sync of this package.
There is one issue that must be considered before syncing this package. In Ubuntu, the encoding was set to "latin-1", but in Debian, the encoding was set to "iso-8859-15". I am not sure if this difference is significant enough to warrant a merge. If it is, please say so, and I will gladly take care of it. Otherwise, this package can be synced.
