Bug Description

I cannot send any file from a Nokia 6630 TO my Ubuntu Hardy desktop. I use the same phone and bluetooth adapter that worked just fine on Ubuntu 7.10
Here is something I found in syslog:
-----
Jun 4 10:20:50 B306-4 NetworkManager: <debug> [1212564050.329927] nm_hal_device_added(): New device added (hal udi is '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/bluetooth_acl_119fc7f0bc').

Jun 4 10:21:00 B306-4 NetworkManager: <debug> [1212564060.228939] nm_hal_device_removed(): Device removed (hal udi is '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/bluetooth_acl_119fc7f0bc').
-----

These messages repeat each time I try to send a file. The first message, "hal_device_added()", pops up when I press "Send" on the phone.
The second one - exactly 10 seconds later.

I get absolutely no error messages from Ubuntu. The phone says "Sending failed".
However, sending a file FROM Ubuntu to the phone works just fine.

Same thing happens to me too. The only thing I can do is to browse the files from my phone, and copy the file to the desktop.

Other problems:
 * Sending file from ubuntu to phone gives out obex unsupported errors, but the file will get sent, eventually.
 * Sending file from phone to ubuntu is as reported in this bug. Phones used, N70, N95 and N73, all reports "Sending Failed"
 * Double clicking on a file when in Browse Device mode gives Obex unsupported error, but dragging the file out to the desktop works.

I've not tried:
 * Using the phone as modem
 * Using ubuntu as a bluetooth network server,
 * or serial port access.

I also had this problem. The only solution that worked was to revert the bluez-utils package to the Gutsy version.

Then receiving a file on the computer started working.

I can confirm this. Same at me.

Me too. The problem is with both Nokia 6300 and my sister's Nokia 6120 classic. Tried to downgrade but the icon for upgrade turns on and it's very annoying.

The same problems happens to me in Hardy Heron. Receiving a file via bluetooth has stopped to work suddenly in Hardy after almost 6 months that it worked ok.

This seems to have been fixed in Intrepid. I had some problems sending files from my N3230 to my Hardy, but now that I've upgraded to Intrepid, I can now send as well as receive files.

I find a way to reproduce the issue (I have an Italian installation so I try to translate the windows labels):
- I start an Hardy Heron 8.04 live CD
- by default Bluetooth preferences are "other devices can connect" in the first tab, "input and network services enabled" in available services tab and in general tab we have no selection in "file transfer" and "authorization requests".
- when I try to send a file from my bluetooth phone there is an error
- so I enable the option to receive file from remote device in general tab
- when I try to resent a file all works ok but without authorization (I think this is an issue as the "accept automatically input requests" in general tab isn't checked)
- now if I change, in the first tab, the previous default option selecting "visible and available for the connection for other devices" (that is the second option) the file transfer doesn't work anymore nor if I reset the options to defaults

Today another strange thing have happened as I haven't been able to browse my cell-phone via bluetooth (because of this bug this is the only way, with usb cable, to transfer a file from my phone to my pc). In fact when I have tried to browse my phone nothing has happened after having accepted the connection in my mobile phone (no phone icon has been displayed in the desktop). Nor restart has resolved the issue. The only solution I have found is to remove associated devices (with bluetooth-properties) and the restart the system.

Tested with Hardy and:
- bluez-utils 3.26-0ubuntu6
- libbluetooth2 3.29-0ubuntu1

Could you please try with gnome-user-share (with replace gnome-bluetooth obex server). don't forget to enable bluetooth file sharing.

Thanks

Baptiste, can you tell me how can I try bluetooth file transfer with gnome-user-share? In system -> preferences -> bluetooth -> general I can only see a voice in the section "file transfer" that says "share files from public folder" but then I don't know ho to use it.
Have I to create a share into a directory and then, via phone, have I to send a file to that share (that is, via phone, should I see that folder)?

Yeah,
that like that it was implemented by GNOME developers.

Hello Baptiste,
In Karmic, I installed gnome-user-share but it did not replace gnome-bluetooth as a package. Also, System > Preferences > Bluetooth shows the same dialog as before (there's nothing about file transfers or sharing). I thought of removing gnome-bluetooth, but gnome-user *requires* it. Of course, I still cannot receive any files from my phone.

Nevermind, it was under Preferences > Personal file sharing (sorry). Should this package be required/recommended by either gnome-desktop-environment or ubuntu-desktop? I think it'd be a nice improvement to new-user experience.

It is installed by default in lucid, so you'll be happy.

I am still not happy (on Lucid at least). Why should it be necessary to enable "Share public files over Bluetooth" when I just want to receive files on the computer? I have already enabled "Receive files over Bluetooth".

Enabling "Receive files over Bluetooth" is enough to make it work for me, but I don't understand

1) Why this is disabled by default
2) Why the setting is in such an obscure location. Personal File Sharing cannot be found in System Settings in 12.04, nor via the default Bluetooth manager, so how is the user expected to find and enable this?

I can not get this to work on Ubuntu 12.04. I have gnome-user-share installed (don't remember if it was by default) and used "Personal File Sharing" to enable "Receive Files in Downloads folder over Bluetooth" (tried enable "Share public files over Bluetooth" as well). The Nokia 5800 just complains immediately "can not connect".

$ sudo dbus-monitor --system

signal sender=:1.138 -> dest=(null destination) serial=67 path=/org/bluez/7410/hci0/dev_xx_xx_xx_xx_xx_xx; interface=org.bluez.Device; member=PropertyChanged

In my desperation I tried a "0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle" instead of the built-in (0a5c:200a Broadcom Corp. BCM2035 Bluetooth dongle), and I got the file transferred. However I got a kernel Oops and dbus and compiz crashing before a total lock-up. Oh well, I guess we can't blame Gnome for this Oops.
