Bug Description

On initial start of firefox, it displays fullscreen (i like to call it super-maximised). ie over gnome panels and without window borders.

This is remedied by pushing F11 twice, to render the web page area fullscreen, then restore to 'maximized' status. It then corrects itself to fit within the gnome panels (they are default top and bottom of the screen), and displays the correct window borders (emerald theme).

I am using:
* Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy
* Firefox 3 beta 5
* Compiz-fusion with emerald (suspect problem exists here, however there are no other apps that display the same issue)
* no Backports or Proposed Update repositories (ie default Ubuntu repositories only)

Update : This bug can be reproduced when firefox is opened in de-maximized mode inside a lower resolution than the last time it has been closed. This can also happens, for example, when a firefox profile is shared between two operating systems with different screen resolutions.

Steps to reproduce:
(You must use compiz to reproduce the bug)
1. Use the bigger resolution that your computer can take and open Firefox.
2. If not already done, demaximize the Firefox window (right clic / Demaximize).
3. Close Firefox
4. Change the screen resolution for a very lower one.
5. Open Firefox

Same issue. I suspect flashplayer : when I visit website without flash animations, the bug never appears. When I visit a website like youtube, the bug appears sometimes.

Can i confirm that this bug is occurring with the latest version of firefox as well? (apt-cache firefox-3.0 will show that it is 3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu2).
If you have desktop effects enabled, could you disable it (Go to System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects and click on None) and check if this problem occurs again?
Also could you try with a new profile and see if it is a profile/extention related issue? Instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs/ under 'Try with a new profile'
In addition, could you also tell us how do you reproduce the bug so that we can try to reproduce it on our end.

Thanks in advance.

It did happen randomly with me on even the latest release... havent tried a different profile or turning of desktop effects, however I installed a new theme and have not had a problem since... so perhaps the bug is actually with the default tango theme...

oh... i forgot.... this happens with me when i clicked the firefox icon under Applications menu, or when i opened hotmail directly from aMSN... but not when i ran from ALT F2 or yakuake drop down terminal (these are the only ways ive opened firefox, and it only happens on first initial opening)

My default homepage is google, so i dont think it has anything to do with the flash player since google has no flash.

sorry... never done this whole bug reporting thing before.... i forgot to mention (yet again) that it happened on a brand new install of ubuntu... I upgraded from 7.10 by doing a fresh install, keeping a second partition which is mounted /home and doing an rm /home/.* prior to the install, so no left over user configs.... i had no extensions installed at the time....

not sure whether this is important or not... but i did notice that the problem seemed to go away after a certain amount of use (ie after a number of consecutive starts of firefox) but after a 'apt-get dist-upgrade' where a kernel upgrade occurred, the bug reappeared

The bug has reappeared again... Tango theme... I opened Gmail from the cGmail tray and firefox now starts fullscreen every time regardless of how i open it (icons, aMSN, terminal, ALT+F2).... my screen resolution is 1024x768, and never changes.... I changed to a third party theme, and it still shows the same problem....

Re-assigning to compiz, per Alexander Sack recommendation, since this bug is not reproducible outside of compiz.

Firefox was starting this way on a clean install for me. It seems that it has gone away since changing the firefox settings from open tabs from previous sessions to open to homepage and clicking don't save session (or setting it to the default) when exiting.
