WIN: Default font issue (Bitstream Vera Sans hell)

Bug Description

I don't know the reason of this and can it be reproduced but... I experienced the problem on 0.45 and continue having troubles with 0.46

Details:

On clean install of 0.45 or 0.46, default font is set to Bitstream Vera Sans for some reason (why?). The font has no Russian letters and thus can't be used for Russian text — only commas and dots are displayed. Trying to "set as default" another font (Arial) solves only half of the problem — new text objects do use new font, but the other drawings/documents [without font specifications I guess] continue using Bitstream. As a result, for example, on 0.46 any Russian tutorial (from Inskcape package) has no readable text.

inkscape is able to use any font with cyrillics installed, substituting letters if necessary. can anyone still reproduce this with latest svn?

I am seeing this issue in en-US on Windows Vista 64-bit SP2 using the 2009-08-17 build of 0.47.

Reproduced with Slovak and Vietnamese tutorials (rev. 22271) on Windows XP (not on Ubuntu 9.04).

All letters are shown with Japanese tutorial on Windows7RC but substitute fonts are not chosen properly. All Japanese fonts are displayed using Mincho (Sans-serif) fonts even if the original settings are Bitstream Vera Sans, Serif or Mono.

Not Sans-serif, it's Serif. Default of Japanese font is Sans-serif family (Meiryo), not Serif.

Replacing Bitstream Vera Serif by Serif and Bitstream Vera Sans by Sans (in the SVG file) seems to solve the issue on the Slovak basic tutorial. Thus changing the font-family to generic fonts may be a good fix (see Bug #438307, "Tutorials: Fontfaces should be specified abstractly")

    everyone has Bitstream Vera Sans and having a non-existant
    default font can cause problems.

Since version 0.48, Inkscape specifies generic "sans" as its default font, rather than Bitstream Vera. Hopefully, that should have fixed this problem. Please feel free to reopen this bug report if I'm mistaken.
