Bug Description

Hello,

while trying to install flashplugin-nonfree in a machine with gutsy, I get the message:

20:38:03 (754.00 KB/s) - "./install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz" salvato [3044538/3044538]

Download done.
md5sum mismatch install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz
The Flash plugin is NOT installed.

Which I guess means that adobe has released a version that is newer than the one that the package was thought for.

I'm on Hardy but I just downloaded the flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.124.0ubuntu1~gutsy1_i386.deb package, then downloaded the Flash plugin from the same location that the Gutsy deb gets it from (http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz) and checked that the md5sum matches (using the md5sum given in the Gutsy deb), and it has checked out ok.

Which version of flashplugin-nonfree are you trying to install? Do you have gutsy-updates enabled in Software Sources?

The version of flash from adobe is
Adobe Flash Player version 9.0.124.0.tar.gz for Linux (x86) | 3MB
That is same that we have in repos.
9.0.48.0.0ubuntu1~7.04.3
That is exactly the reason someone didnt finish what they started I will
look for other bug and mark as a dup talk to person and see if he will
let me do it since he hasnt for some reason.

Sorry its not in backports. Please attach your /etc/apt/sources.list file to this bug so we can see what is going on. I just reopened bug #173890 and im hoping that its not because of a repo you should have but dont have enabled.

John,

dierre is running Gutsy, and the most up-to-date flashplugin-nonfree package is flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.124.0ubuntu1~gutsy1 which is in gutsy-updates. I verified that the md5sum matches with this, so he either doesn't have gutsy-updates enabled or the download is being corrupted

Hello. I'm not expert at the ubuntu repository structure, but I think I have gutsy-updates enabled; anyway, my sources.list is attached.
What is strange is that apt is not installing version flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.124.0ubuntu1~gutsy1 that was mentioned by Chris, but another one.
Here is the output, after doing an apt-get update.

Ok, the md5sum will definately not check out with the version you are trying to install. Your sources.list does suggest you have gutsy-updates enabled though. Could you try with another mirror? (System - > Administration -> Software Sources, then select another location in 'Download from').

If that still doesn't work, could you select the flashplugin-nonfree package in Synaptic, then go to Package -> Properties and select the 'Versions' tab. Could you tell me what versions are shown there? You should see the old version from gutsy and the more recent one from gutsy-updates.

I tried with another mirror; when refreshing the packages list, some downloads fail, although it shouldn't be too important with respect to this problem, since it it the translations. Here is the output of a manual apt-get update:

Spotted it! You only have multiverse enabled for gutsy and gutsy-security, but not gutsy-updates - there lies your problem. I've attached your sources.list with multiverse and universe added to gutsy-updates. I've also corrected the commented out reference to feisty-backports as well (now shows gutsy-backports). If you want to enable / disable software components (restricted / universe / multiverse) in the future, please use the Software Sources tool. Unchecking / checking any of these software components in this tool should disable / enable that component globally for all repositories enabled (ie, gutsy, gutsy-updates, gutsy-security, gutsy-backports and gutsy-proposed).

In the meantime, I'm closing this bug as it is no longer valid.

Thank you

Problem solved, thank you.

Could you please point me to some document explaining the structure of ubuntu repositories/components, so that next time I have a problem like this I will hopefully be able to diagnose it by myself? Thanks!
