Bug Description

wolf@wb:/var/log$ uname -a
Linux wb 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 12:47:45 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Ubuntu 8.04 64bit, FireFox 3.05b

Connecting to URL http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy crashes Gnome (screen blanks, gnome restarts)
Connecting to http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty or http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Hardy works.

On Ubuntu 8.04 32bit it works fine.

Strange.

How can I find out more about the reason?

I get exactly the same crash when accessing the above url, as well as developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4986

I also have Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64. My videocard is nVidia 8600GT running driver 169.12 (obtained via EnvyNG)

Update: opening the link with firefox in safe mode has a slightly different effect - the computer freezes, i.e. no response to mouse/keyboard, even <Ctrl-Alt-Backspace>, <Ctrl-F2-F8>, etc. I don't have time to play around with debug extensions right now, but I'll try to get the backtrace later this week.

does it help if you start with fresh profile? e.g. _backup_
$HOME/.mozilla ... and move it away? Alternatively you could create a
new user on your system and log in as that user.

It does it on a new profile, on my current one, and on my test profiles. Also all my users seem to have the same symptoms.

Ok, generating a backtrace like described in the MozillaTeam/Bugs link above does not work because gnome crashes. Any ideas on how I can collect the backtrace in this situation?

Is there a firefox .crash file getting generated in /var/crash? Maybe
remove any file in there (to ensure that you really get a .crash file
from your crash), then reproduce and if there is a .crash file submit
that as a new bug using apport by double-clicking on it.

No crash file. Gnome crashes, not Firefox. Firefox is just the means to terminate Gnome.

ok, this is a driver issue then. what graphic card do you use? which
driver? maybe attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to this bug.

Calling the URL did not reproduce the error. Instead the page was loaded correctly. After so many updates to xorg, firefox and may of my add-ons it is hard to figure out what solved the issue. Lets call it a day
