Bug Description

I just installed the latest daily build of the preview as of 9/21. I'm using an old i810-based system,
but I know that both the drives and the chipset support 32-bit I/O. Nevertheless, none of the drives
have 32-bit IO_support enabled by default.

This feature (like DMA, see bug #36185) is not enabled by default because some
drives fail to work when it is enabled.

Is this something that could be tested for when detecting hardware? Or do some
mostly seem okay but act a bit flaky?

There are a few other settings that could enhance performance that would be
useful to test for.

The failure modes range from intermittent I/O errors to complete system hangs,
so this is difficult to test in an automated way

I'm unsure what package is responsible for this, but I guess kernel is a good candidate...

We are closing this bug report as it concerns the 2.6.12 kernel which is part of Breezy which is no longer supported. However, please reopen it if it is still an issue with a supported version of Ubuntu and feel free to submit bug reports in the future.
