Bug Description

I've seen this on several fresh installs of Hardy, on several different machines.

To reproduce:
- System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts > Layout Options
- select any key as the Compose Key
- try typing, the compose key works
- log out and then in again
- the compose key no longer works
- Layout Options says that the key you selected is still the compose key even though it doesn't work
- unselecting and reselecting that key makes it work again, until the next session change

It seems quite similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgnomekbd/+bug/190934 however I can consistently reproduce it.

As noted in #190934, I have seen similar symptoms.

I can partly reproduce this: logging in and logging out will sometimes reproduce the problem - but not always.
Also, the problem occured during a session, i.e. compose-key worked, then 5 minutes later compose key suddenly doesn't work.

This is on a system with Hardy, a generic 104 key keyboard and no VMware. I will try to get the xev results when the problem occurs.

Seems this is the same bug I was about to file. Every time I reboot my compose key is forgotten, though layout options still indicates the settings I have.

To repro:

System->Preferences->Keyboard
Layouts Tab, Layout Options button
Compose key position, check 'Menu is Compose.'

open some window in which you can type and hit the Menu key followed by (for example) the letter 'o' and then '/', you should see a ø printed. Now reboot (or possibly just log out as the original report suggests, I haven't tried it). Once you are logged in again open a window to type in and try the same key combo again. When you hit the Menu key this time though you will see the right click menu pop up. Again go to:

System->Preferences->Keyboard
Layouts Tab, Layout Options button
(this time 'Menu is Compose' will already be checked)
uncheck and re-check 'Menu is Compose.'

the key Menu key will now work as compose again as expected.

My system:
Ubuntu 8.04 amd64
2.6.24-19-generic

Hi, I have exactly this same problem, and I have to do exactly the same thing to make it work again. I don't notice if it goes away between sessions, but it definitely gets forgotten when I reboot.

I'm running Hardy updated from Gutsy on amd64, but it seems this happens on fresh installs too. I will check on i386 to see if it happens there too...

I've confirmed this bug on Hardy on both amd64 and i386. It seems to be related to automatic login.

If I set my laptop to automatic login, then reboot, the compose key settings are not active after startup.

If I then log out and then log in manually, the compose key settings work again.

You should be able to reproduce this with these steps:

 1) Go to the login window admin utility (i.e. gdmsetup)
 2) Go to the "Security" tab and enable automatic login
 3) Reboot
 4) Notice that your compose key no longer works (e.g. typing Compose-' e in a terminal or a text box will give you 'e)
 5) Log out
 6) Log in
 7) Notice that your compose key works again (e.g. typing Compose-' e in a terminal or text box will give you é)

I know this has been marked as a duplicate of another bug, but that bug's description doesn't agree with my problem:

If you enable autologin (it is in the settings, System/Administration/Login window/Security/Enable Automatic Login), then any settings about your keyboard layout including the shortcut to switch between layouts do not work on your next reboot.

Whereas this bug's description does:

To reproduce:
- System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts > Layout Options
- select any key as the Compose Key
- try typing, the compose key works
- log out and then in again
- the compose key no longer works

I would just like to point out that I still have this problem (in Hardy) almost a year after the bug was reported, and I'm sure all the others in this bug also still have the problem.

Initially, the description didn't agree with what I myself was doing
(passwordless Login instead of autologin). But the workaround
beautifully worked for me (and I've had the title changed).
Hence, the interesting point would be that the workaround doesn't work
for you, if that's the case.
