Bug Description

This is regarding a Canonical-supplied Toshiba Tecra M2.

Fn+F9 is used to enable/disable the touchpad. However, nothing happens when I
try to turn it on. The Tecra M2 has dual pointing devices: Alps touchpad and
Accupoint.

Most FN+Fx keys don't work on a Toshiba Satelite M40-307, from whatg I read on the forums, it is the case for all Toshiba models.

There is a package called fnfxd in synaptics which is supposed to fix this in synpatics but I never succeeded in having it working, it required the toshiba_acpi module and apparently the kernel would have to be recompiled for that. Curiously, toshiba users appear to have sony_acpi module compiled by default instead.

In the specific case of the M40-30x, basic keys like brightness control or switching to an external monitor plainly don't work. Next month I will do a Firefox presentation for an opensource event on my Windows partition just because I can' t switch the screen display to an external monitor :(

I think severity should be raised because itaffects basic laptop functionnalities, people DO expect to be able to change their screen brightness on linux...

fnfxd is not required on Ubuntu - our toshiba_acpi driver generates
events itself. If a specific function is not working, do you have any
output when you do the following:

sudo tail -f /var/log/acpid

and then press a function key?

I use a Toshiba Tecra M2 (S730) and the toshiba acpi module works mostly OK for me.
I have:

toshiba_acpi: Toshiba Laptop ACPI Extras version 0.19a-dev

on kernel 2.6.20, ubuntu 7.04

the only quirks i get are - when waking up from sleep my touchpad seems to work only for mouse movement but not for clicking (right or left).
only solution for that now is ctrl-alt-backspace and re-login.

also sometimes after sleep it will log me out.

(same thing tends to happen after hibernate)

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

I am having similar problem/behavior on a Toshiba Dynabook TX/760LS. I have a clean install of Hardy Heron 8.04 and the FN key does not function at all which means, in my case, I cannot use ANY of my hotkeys as they are all dependent on the FN key.

Is there any progress on a solution?

Thanks

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I did switch to the Beta 8.10 release running 2.6.27-4. Unfortunately, now several things related to acpi have stopped working:

1. The toshiba-acpi kernel module itself seems to be missing. Thus, the Fn + keys for controlling brightness, etc., don't work at all.

2. I can still choose Hibernate from the power settings, but all that does is lock the screen and ask for the password. If I do log out, and get back to the username prompt, and then choose Hibernate, then it works.

Toshiba M45-S351, running Intrepid Ibex 8.10 final release with kernel 2.6.27-7-generic.
same as Murali reported, missing toshiba kernel modules all together. Fn+ keys are all defunct. I had problem with screen brightness since Edgy or Feisty, but at least screen switch and touchpad lock were still function up til Hardy (I can't remember what version of kernel it was running... should be the latest backport version in Hardy repository) . now none of the Fn+ keys work.

any help or direction for troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated!

Fn+F9 still does not work, however there has been some improvement! :) The Fn+F6/F7 keys (brightness) do work. Some others seem to as well (Fn+F11 turns on numlock - not sure thats what it's supposed to do, but at least it does something). Fn+F1 (lock screen) still does nothing. Fn+Esc toggles mute (as it should).
Fn+F12 appears to do nothing, along with Fn+F8 (toggle wireless).

I am seeing this on Ubuntu 9.04 -- don't know if it should be re-opened or if a new issue should be created.

I had this issue on 8.04, saw this thread, performed all upgrades (in this case it was the kernel) and then the Fn power keys worked. Now that I've upgraded (reinstalled) to 9.04, the Fn keys are again functionnal.

My laptop is a Toshiba Tecra A8.

Jerome S. Gotangco, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
