Bug Description

Binary package hint: rungetty

rungetty 1.2-12 (Hardy 8.04-rc) segfaults on startup when executed from an upstart script.

/etc/event.d/tty1 contains:

    respawn
    exec /sbin/rungetty -u root tty1 /usr/local/sbin/netboot_login

This results in a blank screen on tty1 and the following in /etc/syslog:

    Apr 22 18:29:08 workstation152-012 kernel: [ 270.653437] rungetty[5758]: segfault at 00000008 eip 08049e15 esp bfbad730 error 4
Apr 22 18:29:08 workstation152-012 init: tty1 main process (5758) killed by SEGV signal
Apr 22 18:29:08 workstation152-012 init: tty1 main process ended, respawning

Some other points:
* This configuration worked in Gutsy (rungetty 1.2-10)
* When I copy Gutsy's rungetty (from version 1.2-10) into this Hardy partition's /sbin, it works
* When I rebuild the 1.2-12 package from source and copy the binary into /sbin, it works

I was trying to rebuild it with symbols to debug, but as you can see it does not crash when I build it, so that effort failed.

The same happens for me EXCEPT that a rebuild of the package doesn't help! The created binary is still segfaulting!

Anybody out there how can and is willing to work on that?!

Are you both using amd64 like the person who reported it on amd64? Are you maybe able to produce some debug output? Especially if a rebuilding doesn't fix it for you I would hope you are able to get a debug build ready and be able to provide a backtrace, hopefully?

Hello Gerfried,

I'm using an ubuntu Hardy server on a Core2Duo T7400 which is an i686
architecture. The rungetty package 1.2-12 failed for my application
(starting some custom applications). After reading the ubuntu bug
report, I've downloaded the 1.2-10 package and everything is o.k. again.
Rebuilding the 1.2.-12 package from the source package doesn't solve the
problem for me.
So, if there is something you want me to do to assist, please describe
want you need and what I should do and I'm happy to provide that
information. I'm an experienced linux user and administrator but I'm not
familiar with system debugging and such stuff... What I want to say is:
could you please be a bit more precise than just saying "provide a
backtrace"... ;-)
If I know how to do this, I can!

Best regards,

    Christian

Marking to confirmed by comment and Debian bug report. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures has lot of instructions how to debug. However this is already fixed in Debian. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=492845 so debugging might be unnecessary.

Maybe Ubuntu should just update rungetty too.

Hi,

I just requested the sync of this package in bug 269886, so this
should be fixed in Intrepid. I'll report back when it is ready to test.

Thanks,

James

Hi,

The package was synced today, and is currently building. It should
mirror out soon, so could someone test the updated package
on Intrepid and confirm that it fixes the issue.

Thanks,

James
