Bug Description

When booting the Ubuntu 8.04 RC1 64Bit CD, the software recognises my Wifi card, and asks me if i want to load the restricted drivers, as i'd expect it to. However if i thin install from the CD, to all the hard disk. the Machine reboots, and under restricted drivers, my ATI card is listed, but not the Broadcom card.

If i thin follow the instructions, referred to on the Linux wireless webpage, (found these by typeing dmesg) And install the Wifi Cutter and Driver, the Wifi will then setup, after a reboot, the Restricted drivers manager then lists the Wifi card as in use.

With the final release this is still the case. I booted the livecd (and yes, my wifi card was listed) and immediately did an install. After install, jockey doesn't list my card (Broadcom 4318) and I have to manually install b43-fwcutter. Strange.

In general, the live CD cannot preserve any changes you do to any files, documents, etc. So the intended way is to set up the Broadcom driver *after* installation.

However, we do have some hacks in place to copy over some drivers. But this does not work for installed firmware at the moment. Would be nice to make this work, but it's not high priority.

Sorry, i think you've missed the point.
If you reread the bug, whats happening is the Broadcom Wifi is being
recognised from the LiveCD, this we accept i belive, that a reboot will lose
the settings.

If however i INSTALL a fresh install of Hardy, i'd expect my Wifi card to
also be recognised. just as it was when i booted the CD, this however
doesn't occur, and it did in Gutsy.

however, to an engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Ah, then I indeed misunderstood you. On the installed system, please open a Terminal window and copy&paste the output of

  jockey-gtk --list --debug 2>&1 | tee /tmp/jockey.txt

and attach /tmp/jockey.txt here. Thanks!
