I am running Hardy with all the current upgrades as of Apr 10 19:39 CST. This worked on previous installs of Hardy (a week ago), possibly a regression?

Hey, guess what? After today's "partial upgrade," this problem has actually gotten worse! Now when I try to enable desktop effects (at ANY level), not only do they definitely NOT turn on, but I lose all my window borders too. And jockey-gtk still crashes. Oh, and compizconfig-settings-manager is totally gone, and apt decides to uninstall compiz when I try to get it back. Can someone maybe look into this?

In my case the problem happens as follows:
1. try to change Visual Effects from None to Norma
2. get message "The composite extension is not available"
3. message won't dismiss (clicking ok does nothing)
4. clicking the window close button [x] triggers the crash.

Fresh install of Hardy:

1. Try changing Visual Effects from None to Normal
2. It waits, and a crash report is detected.
3. Get message "Desktop effects could not be enabled".
4. Visual Effects is back to None.

I haven't installed any graphics drivers. Maybe it cannot be enabled because of that, but it shouldn't crash.

My guess. They introduced some kind of bug in jockey, which is now the
program which cares for detecting if a closed video driver is available
and needed/installable. This program does more than it looks; it not
only cares for installing the packages, but actually configures the
whole system so that they are used. Since this the fact that xorg.conf
looks much barer and, well, useless, nowadays.
Since jockey is obviously, bugged, however, this not only means that we
can't enable simply our "beloved" restricted drivers, it also means that
even if we install them, the system is not configured so to use them!
My solution was simply to open my xorg.conf file, and add the old

Driver "nvidia"

line inside the video device section. Guess what, it worked, now I am
back to compiz (note: this is kinda of a hack - which I hope is only
temporary. Would be...embarassing to launch Hardy in this situation ;-) ).

As for compiz behaving strangely today, that's another story. They are
obviously upgrading the packages in the repo, but they are doing so at a
strange pace...only some compiz packages are currently upgraded...so
that now I have compiz-core but can't have compiz-gnome. Oh well, at
least I can have compiz enabled. Guess we'll see it fixed in some hours...

Kudos

Same problem in a fresh install of Hardy.

Trying to launch Jockey at all, or enable Compiz, on an ATI X1300 All-In-Wonder, causes an immediate Jockey crash.

I think this Bug is directly connected to Bug #214914 ("jockey-gtk crashed with AttributeError in enabled()"). I had both of them! The first (this one) occurs when I try to change visual effects and the second one, when I try to open "Hardware Driver" dialog (third-party configuration).

I have a ATI Radeon Xpress 1100.

I can also observe this bug. Steps to reproduce this for me are:

- change desktop effects from custom to none in appearance
- change back to custom.
- confirm the message that you want to keep the settings.
- jockey crashes.

I am running all updates as of april 12th, using fglrx on a X1600. Desktop effects work fine by the way. Appart from the crash message everything seems to work just like it should.

Right, it's indeed the same bug as bug 214914. I just fixed it:

kde-guidance (0.8.0svn20080103-0ubuntu14) hardy; urgency=low

  * Disable kubuntu_30_displayconfig_no_xorg_correct_detection.patch. It
breaks the API, and the previous change did not even state a bug number.
This broke jockey, displayconfig-gtk, and other reverse dependencies and
is absolutely inappropriate right before a release. (LP: #214914 and a
    magnitude of 100 duplicates)
