Bug Description

Binary package hint: mplayer

I'm wondering why there is no mplayer in universe. Debian approved mplayer for their main-repo so there shouldn't be any licensing problems. So I think having mplayer in multiverse and not in universe is a bug.

I'm confirming this to the archive admins. Please note that there is a plethora of package in multiverse which are depending or related to mplayer. Most of them (if not all) are in multiverse since they depend on mplayer, therefore if we follow debian these should also be changed to universe:

gnome-mplayer (ubuntu package)
gecko-mediaplayer (ubuntu package)
mozilla-mplayer (changed to main in debian)
xmms-xmmplayer (should be removed)
videotrans (ubuntu package)
tovid (ubuntu package)
smplayer (changed to main in debian)
ogmrip (not in debian official)
nuvexport (ubuntu package)
mythvideo (ubuntu package)
mythbuntu-live (ubuntu package)
mplayerthumbs (ubuntu package)
mplayer-skin-blue (changed to main in debian)
mplayer-fonts (not in debian official)
kmediafactory (ubuntu package)
iriverter (ubuntu package)
dvdrip (not in debian official)
devede (ubuntu package)
acidrip (not in debian official)

According to the mplayer maintainer we unfortunately have to keep mplayer in multiverse.
Apparently Debian disables all encoding, so they can get away with it in main.
We don't want to do that, so we will keep the patent encumbered encodings and the package in multiverse.

Do you mean encoding or decoding? Is encoding needed for mplayer just to be a player?

mplayer includes mencoder, to get mplayer to universe you have to remove mencoder or cripple it.

So with simply "./configure --disable-mencoder" we could get mplayer itself into universe? Than we could have mplayer in universe and mplayer-full in multiverse.

In my opinion this would be great. What's your opinion about this?

I would like to re-open this task for mplayer, since ffmpeg is now in main. It could be a good idea to provide a version of mplayer in universe so we can ship it on a Live-CD.
For now, there is 3 problematic build-depends (which are in multiverse) :
- libfaac-dev (see also bug #374900)
- libmp3lame-dev
- libxvidcore4-dev

Is there any possible replacement which are in universe ?

Now, if you want to do two builds of mplayer, one of which disables those Build-Depends, and one that doesn't, this means you need two copies of the mplayer source in the archive, which *really* doesn't appeal.

I am going to unsubscribe ubuntu-archive from this bug, you can re-subscribe the team when there is clear action that needs us.

I believe that both can be promoted to universe. libfaac should probably
removed from ubuntu.

There is still the "patent problem" which prevent those packages to go into universe since the beginning of Ubuntu. And I'm not aware of any progress on this, but I can be wrong (I hope :) )

What patent problem?

See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/PatentPolicy for the updated policy ubuntu
has on patents.

please note that x264 is already in universe, so patents shouldn't be
the problem for libxvidcore4-dev.

lame could need further investigation, though.

Mplayer nowadays at least depends on libfaad-dev instead, which is in universe.

> - libxvidcore4-dev

This is in universe nowadays as well.

> - libmp3lame-dev

This is the only remaining dependency problem AFAIK (checking what gets installed with apt-get build-dep mplayer) for moving mplayer to universe.

with the dependency on faac beeing removed, xvid and lame both now in universe, mplayer should be good to be promoted to universe as well.

archive admins, could you please promote mplayer now from multiverse to universe? Thanks!
