Xubuntu 8.04 currently includes two screensavers, not sure which one is default. I suppose gnome-screensaver but reporting for xscreensaver too just to be sure.

Changed in gnome-screensaver:

(I could swear I posted a question here, but I don't see any)

Is the xscreensaver daemon running (check with "ps ax|grep saver")? It should have been started by the xfce session (not exactly sure how). Can you please try to create a new user and see if the daemon is started when logging in?

Hello,

When using my main (and only user) account:

~$ ps ax|grep saver
15224 pts/0 R+ 0:00 grep saver

I'm not sure what that means. I trust you can interpret that.

If I can do anything else to help, please let me know.

Thanks, that confirms that the screensaver process is not running. Can you please create a test account and try? (You can delete the test account afterwards if you want).

Thanks, must be something with the XFCE session not starting the screensaver daemon.

Having the same problem in Xubuntu 8.04 release.

Xubuntu uses gnome-screensaver by default but it is not autostarted. This leads to Bug #200665: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce-mcs-plugins/+bug/200665
