Bug Description

changes are not persisted.

Steps to reproduce:
* start users-admin
* create a new user
* the user is shown, but the console shows the following

(users-admin:23965): Liboobs-CRITICAL **: create_dbus_struct_from_user: assertion `(login && password && homedir && shell)' failed

(users-admin:23965): Liboobs-CRITICAL **: Not committing due to inconsistencies in the configuration, this reflects a bug in the application

Expected behaviour:
The user should be created,
or in case of a problem
a notification should be shown

Hi,

It appears as though this bug report is the same as

  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=521438

upstream, could you please check to see if you have
any empty shells in /etc/passwd?

Thanks,

James

Hi,

Thanks for checking, it seems that this is a different bug
then. If you read

  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=521438

there is a method described for testing the backend
that is used to store the information, which is what
appears to be at fault. Would you be able to try that
test?

Thanks,

James

the testscript mentioned there does not exist anymore, but there's a script called diagnostics.pl, here is the output, hope that helps

Hi,

Thanks for the test, I haven't had a chance to look in to it yet.

I've attached the test-backends script, I managed to find it, it
requires you to configure the package first. Would you be willing
to run this as well? You may need to install a perl package or
two it seems (I already had them installed apparently).

Thanks,

James

ok, found it - after running ./configure, the script was there.

here is the output for UsersConfig and GroupsConfig, let me know if you need more

Hi,

Thanks for the information. I can't see anything wrong with it,
but I'm not an expert.

I'm not sure how to proceed from here.

Thanks,

I can confirm this on Ubuntu Hardy! Any news? I have Sabayon and Pessulus installed. Can they cause such a problem?

My console output:

(users-admin:7449): Liboobs-CRITICAL **: create_dbus_struct_from_user: assertion `(login && password && homedir && shell)' failed

(users-admin:7449): Liboobs-CRITICAL **: Not committing due to inconsistencies in the configuration, this reflects a bug in the application

Hi,

Also i can confirm this bug on Hardy.

Is it possible that this has anything to do with ThinkFinger which i have installed (version 0.3)?

I don't get any console output at all, but i looked at the system-log, where first a new group is added (name=test, GID=1003), then a new user is added (name=test, UID=1002, GID=1003, home=/home/test, shell=/bin/bash). Then it gets weird: The user test is deleted, the group test is removed and a new group (name=test, GID=1003) is added.

When i add the user with the useradd command like that (after removing the newly created group test) "sudo useradd test" the following happens: A new group (name=test, GID=1003) and a new user (name=test, UID=1002, GID=1003, home=/home/test, shell=/bin/sh).

Hi,

I can confirm too.

When i add a user through users-admin, after removing /etc/passwd entry.

(users-admin:15492): Liboobs-CRITICAL **: create_dbus_struct_from_user: assertion `(login && password && homedir && shell)' failed

(users-admin:15492): Liboobs-CRITICAL **: Not committing due to inconsistencies in the configuration, this reflects a bug in the application

I am not using hardy beta, and the bug is on group adding.

Yes, this is not a duplicate of bug 205144 but some other problem in system-tools-backends. I have unmarked as such because it is important to be able to track the upstream bug.

This seems a duplicate of bug 220697. Reading the reports in that bug, it seems there that the bug appears when a password is set for root, which is my case.

Milan Bouchet-Valat (nalimilan) wrote :

That must be fixed upstream and will be in Karmic when the next GNOME beta is out. I guess different issues are mixed here, but they all come from the fact that a field is empty: home dir, shell or password. René's case (comment #9) for example is because one user does not have a home dir set (see the logs).

This has been partially fixed already in Karmic, and will be solved completely very soon (accept empty passwords too). The warning line has been removed (except for empty logins), so that bug can't appear. Hope that will help you to administer your system. Please continue reporting precise and detailed bugs about the gnome-system-tools!
