Bug Description

Problem found with 2.6.24-12

IBM ThinkPad T30

Starting in normal mode i found the following

[50.261006] intel_rng: FWH not detected

and in recovery mode

[41.135147] input: TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint as /devices/platform/i8047/serio1/serio2/input/input8

I start ubuntu choosing the previous release, some clue for this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hi fredyms,

Care to boot the 2.6.24-12 kernel with the "quiet" and "splash" options removed and then take a digital photo of your screen at the point the boot process fails? Just curious what other messages are showing up. Thanks.

Hi Fredyms,

Hopefully I can answer some of your questions. First, there are a significant amount of changes between the 2.6.22 and 2.6.24 kernel. The Ubuntu kernel is rebased with the upstream kernel at the beginning of each release cycle. You can view the upstream changelog's here: http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/. Then some of the Ubuntu kernel changelogs can be seen here: https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/ .

Next, it is helpful to the development teams if bug reports target one specific issue. Here you mention three issues. If you could open a new bug report for each of the other issues you are seeing that would be great. It seems like the original issue you mention may actually be a duplicate of bug 102982. Some comments there mention blacklisting intel_rng as a temporary workaround.

Thanks a lot, Leann.

You are right, bug 102982, seems the same problem.

I put 2 outputs one for the 2.6.22-14 with this version i don't have any problem and in the other side 2.6.24-12 and the new 2.6.24-14 who doesn't works.

But i think that the problem are only one, based in the "intel_rng: FWH not detected" on boot.

If you are agree with that, i keep waiting for next fixes. Tell me what i have to do with this bug..

I got the same problem on a T40 using 2.6.24-15. I have to wait for three minutes and then see a "fail" on the boot-screen (nosplash and not quiet). The Trackpoint works fine.

I am having the identical problem after the Hardy upgrade on an IBM T30 as well.

The kernel seems to be 2.6.24-17.

I think I upgraded from the 2.6.20-16 kernel.

Please find attached the recommended attachments.

It seems that the dmesg and kernel logs are from my successful boots, not the one with the bug. I don't have a camera available to photograph the boot screen, but I see that immediately before the TPPS/2 module hangs, there is an attempt to load a module called Padlock that throws an error. I will try blacklisting this.

I did already try blacklisting the Intel_rng module. The kernel succeeded in booting, but I was left with no network interfaces, as in the above reports.

Also, NB: I see the subject line says 2.6.24-12. I am having this problem under 2.6.24-17. I wonder if I should file a new bug?

Regards,

Ed

I can also confirm this bug.

I am using a Thinkpad T30, and when upgrading to hardy this bit me hard and it took some debugging to realize that the kernel was causing the trouble. When the boot process hung, I pressed ctrl-alt-delete, and the system resumed, but in a very strange way. Almost no hardware worked when gnome finally came up and I got really confused. The last month I have had to delete any incoming 2.4.24 kernels from grub and only boot the .22 version, otherwise the system would be completely b0rked.

I would like to help, but don't know where to start. This _is_ a serious bug for T30 owners, and users that are less computer-savvy than me would probably be way frustrated.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I'm very glad to say this newer 2.6.27 kernel (include in Alpha 4) resolves
the bug reported here. I hope that Alpha 5 works the same.

Thanks everybody for the help.
