Bug Description

Binary package hint: libservlet2.4-java

libservlet2.4-java provide files /usr/share/java/jsp-api.jar and /usr/share/java/servlet-api.jar that imho should be alternatives, not fixed links.

I'm packaging tomcat6 that provide those files and I consider using alternatives (and not divertions as I must now).

As jsp-api.jar and servlet-api.jar are now produced as by-product of tomcat6 compilation there won't quite surely be stand-alone packaging for libservlet2.5-java and the need of smooth upgrading need those alternatives. Perhaps even a Debian upstream request.

I disagree with this approach. different APIs should never be handled with alternatives. when using these alternatives you' ll never know how the alternative is configured and how it affects the build.

for this particular use case, you really should depend/build-depend on one servlet package and not use the copy included in tomcat6.

What is/should-be the status on this bug? It's been sitting "incomplete" for over 5 months, but it doesn't appear to be waiting for any information, just going nowhere because of a disagreement. I think we should either move this along, or mark it invalid.
