I think that this problem is solved in Breezy with a correct esd config by
default. It's part of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AudioInfrastructure
Are you running breezy or hoary ?

(Well, to solve your problem I suggest you to read :

what do you mean by "the correct esd config"? Was that a bug from totem or from
your configuration?

i changed the default ubuntu configuration with the one i found in the ubuntu
forums.

[esd]
auto_spawn=1
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2
spawn_wait_ms=100
# default options are used in spawned and non-spawned mode
default_options=

This seems to work, but is not the ubuntu default.

What have you changed? The auto_spawn? The should not be required since
gnome-session starts esd for you. Have you changed "Enable sound server startup"
option from gnome-sound-properties? The default settings work me for me and a
lot of other people.

i think the default hoary esd config is:

[esd]
auto_spawn=0
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 5
spawn_wait_ms=100
# default options are used in spawned and non-spawned mode
default_options=

i've the "Enable sound server startup" enabled, so esd starts on startup. this
way gnome sound events were working fine, but totem-xine was not working working.

Changing the esd config file makes it work, totem-xine and gnome sound events.

Is this still a problem with a stock install in Dapper or Edgy?
