getty failing on amd64 running 32-bit?

Bug Description
During installation it stops when it gets to battery status....( don't know why
because it's NOT a laptop and has no battery) Then it starts looping something
like "respawning to fast....waiting for 5 minutes"
It is the i386 version of Kubuntu that has this problem but not the amd64
version.(running on a amd64 platform)
Hope it makes sense...

Have confirmed this in an AMD Athlon 700/800 environment on a desktop whitebox
using the Kubuntu 5.0.3 live cd to load.
Installation hangs after posting "*Checking battery status ... [ok]"
After a few minutes get the respawning loop message.
