Please:

1. Attach a screenshot or photo of the problem.

2. Try selecting 'Ubuntu on Wayland' on the login screen, just before you enter your password. Does it have the same bug?

Thanks Daniel.
Screenshot attached.
I am back in Win10 right now, which also became affected by the "hazy bottom half" of the display, although the full screen displayed behind the haze (just hard to read).

Will need to try booting again from the stick, to see the option for Wayland.

Cheers
Glenn

Next time you boot Ubuntu, please try not only 'Ubuntu on Wayland' but also different screen resolutions in Settings. I would like to know if the problem is specific to the native mode of the LCD panel or happens in other modes too. It sounds like this might be a hardware issue, especially if Win10 has something similar.

Thanks Daniel.
I rebooted and used Ubuntu (safe graphics), and all was well.
The resolution only has one option - 1024 x 768.
So problem solved - thank you for your prompt response.

Safe mode isn't a fix, it's just a temporary workaround. It will give you the wrong resolution and no hardware acceleration either.

Please follow the instructions in comment #4 as soon as is convenient.

I have rebooted with the straight Ubuntu option rather than the Safe Graphics option.
From Settings/Display I have tried all combinations of Resolution, with Scaling ON, and tried various Scale options.
They all make the changes but still only within the top half of the screen.

Hi Daniel.

Here is the screenshot of the start up options. There is no 'Ubuntu on
Wayland' option available to me at start up.
I have tried each option, without success at this point.
Windows is still affected. Hard to show as the bottom half "haze" is very
light today.

On the login screen, select your account but before entering a password click the icon that appears in the bottom right corner of the screen. There you can select 'Ubuntu on Wayland'.

Hi Daniel.
I do not have a login screen, so I do not have a password nor do I see any
of the options you have mentioned. See the attached screenshots.
Screenshot 1 shows the options I have. I usually go with 'try Ubuntu' or I
exit installation completely.
Screenshot 2 shows the desktop and the apps option, which is the only extra
thing I can do.

Windows today

I did not want to actually install Ubuntu. I wanted to be able to run it
and see how it has progressed since I last used 12.04 from 2012 till 2016
on 3 x machines that were formerly Win XP.

In summary then, my hardware is suspected to be the issue, and if I want to
progress to see if the Wayland option helps, I have to install Ubuntu.

From what I have seen so far, I will not proceed with installation.

However, I may have to-visit that decision if I am unable to resolve the
issue in Win 10 - if I have to rebuild Win 10, I may as well clear it all
out and install Ubuntu.

Thank you for your perseverance Daniel.

OK. You would need to install Ubuntu before you can choose Wayland. But it's not guaranteed to fix things. And if you see related problems in Windows 10 then it sounds like the hardware is faulty :(
Maybe not badly faulty... if the problem is just incorrect timing info in the monitor's EDID. It's not unusual for manufacturers to mess up EDIDs so hopefully that's the only problem.

Regardless, if this is fixable in software then it sounds kernel-related so reassigning...

Hi Daniel.

I have installed Ubuntu over Win10.
I have enabled Ubuntu on Wayland.
Everything works - LAN/WAN, Audio, Video, WiFi, Bluetooth, Printing, Mail,
software updates, etc.
It's just that it is still squashed up into the top half of the screen.

What else should I be doing please?

Hi Glenn,

That first screenshot in comment #17 is most telling. It shows the BIOS screen is rendered half right and half wrong. So given some of the problems persist in the BIOS screen (when no OS is running) AND in Windows 10, I think it's likely the screen is faulty and needs replacing. But maybe we can still improve the Linux situation...

Next,

1. Please verify the problem occurs in both 'Ubuntu' and 'Ubuntu on Wayland' sessions.

2. Log into a regular 'Ubuntu' session and run:

   xrandr --verbose > xrandrv.txt
   cat /sys/class/drm/*/edid > edids.bin

and attach the resulting files here.

3. Look in Settings > Screen Display and try selecting different values of 'Resolution' and 'Refresh Rate'.

Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Incomplete
Changed in mutter (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Thanks Daniel.

BIOS Update was done under Windows/HP Tools before I installed Ubuntu.

xrandrv.txt is attached. edids.bin would not attach, as it was empty.

I tried various display settings, which all worked, but within the top half
of the screen.

Wayland versions done. Again, the edids.bin would not attach as it was
empty.

I have already made various changes to the display under Wayland. All
successful, although only in top half of the screen.

Thanks. That confirms there is no EDID coming from the screen, so Linux has to guess about the signalling method.

Turns out you're not the first to encounter this bug:

  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97822

So the good news is the hardware is not faulty but just unusual.

One user says:

However note that changing the BIOS mode probably requires reinstalling Ubuntu after that. Still, it sounds well worth trying.

summary: - DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen
+ [HP EliteOne 800 G2 23-in Touch AiO] Display is limited to top half of
+ the screen
no longer affects: mutter (Ubuntu)
Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Confirmed
importance: Undecided → Medium

Thanks Daniel.
Yes, this is a touchscreen with B&O logo.

Now, how do I change the BIOS mode please?

Attached are screenshots of the current HP info re Boot, BIOS, and UEFI.

No that probably won't help... unless you can:

1. Change to legacy BIOS mode.

2. Try booting Ubuntu from USB.

3. If everything suddenly works then reinstall Ubuntu.

4. If the problem persists then change the BIOS mode back to UEFI.

You are a star Daniel.

I followed the instructions at #80 under Bug 97822. That is:
Disabled Legacy Mode
Disabled Secure Boot
both options were on the same Advanced BIOS panel.

I then re-booted without success.

So I went with the final bit of the instructions and re-installed Ubuntu.
Success!
I updated the software and re-booted. Still at full screen.

Now all I have to do is get Ubuntu set up again!

edids.bin was still empty.

Glenn Stewart

Great to hear!

I should probably also set the correct bug status here, which is 'Invalid' as it's not a bug in the Linux kernel. It's a bug in the machine's firmware/BIOS.

Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Invalid
