Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

OpenOffice crashes due to an extreme memory leak when I use a page background image.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Write a document, watch top (Xorg and soffice.bin memory usage stay in normal range)
2) Apply a page background image that covers the whole page (e.g. 72 dpi PNG for the whole page)
3) Scroll around, add some paragraphs.... watch top: Xorg memory usage increases by 5 MB for each new line! Scrolling a few pages up&down increases memory use by 300 MB
4) Computer begins to swap and Xorg becomes unusable. Only solution: killall -9 soffice.bin / Xorg from SSH

This bug does not appear when using a JPEG background image!

Bug appears with at least these OpenOffice versions, both from Ubuntu 7.10:
* AMD64: openoffice.org-core 1:2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3, Tue Nov 27 19:01:17 GMT 2007
* i386: openoffice.org-core 1:2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3, Tue Nov 27 18:52:42 GMT 2007

I can give you the document/images if you need them to reproduce the bug.

Sorry for the useless attachments, but I clicked "Report a bug" in my OpenOffice and it wanted to file it as a Firefox bug and attached these documents. Maybe I should open just another bug-reporting bug...

I can confirm same behavior when working on a document with many images that I putted by drag and dropping. Xorg starting getting really memory hungry reaching 1GB resident memory after a short time period (5-10minutes). I can't tell exactly which action is producing this mem-leak but for sure ooo has a SERIOUS resource-leak with xorg when working with images.

I can't reproduce this problem on Ubuntu 7.10 or Ubuntu Hardy, please attach an example file that has this problem for you. I think that this may be fixed on Ubuntu Hardy due to a patch that I added, but I can't currently make it show the problem on 7.10 either.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

I'm now on a Fedora PC with OpenOffice it happens here too. So it doesn't seem to be Ubuntu-specific but an OOo bug.

How to reproduce: Just open writer, set this image as page background (the original one wasn't larger than the page, but it works with this too), scroll a bit up & down and watch X memory requirements grow

I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 7.10 and as far as I can tell it is fixed on Ubuntu Hardy (8.04), I can't get memory usage of X to go up by scrolling around in the document with the new version.
