Bug Description

Download the update of flashplayer (culprit version 9.0.r115 at time of writing) from: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz

# tar xvf install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz
# cd install_flash_player_9_linux/
# ./flashplayer-installer

Install to ~/.mozilla/plugins and logoff.

To check that install went properly, open about:plugins in konqueror and firefox; both applications report that the installation was OK:

Shockwave Flash Shockwave Flash 9.0 r115 libflashplayer.so

When konqueror is started from a konsole and then opening a swf file in a new tab:

# konqueror
(process:10052): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_clipboard_get_for_display: assertion `display != NULL' failed
Adobe Flash Player: gtk_clipboard_get(GDK_SELECTION_PRIMARY); failed. Trying to call gtk_init(0,0);

Then closing tab:

  Major opcode: 10
  Minor opcode: 0
  Resource id: 0x2a00008
X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3

X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3
  Major opcode: 25

KCrash: Application 'nspluginviewer' crashing...

Then produces the following crash handler Backtrace:

Here is my backtrace. I have not worked enough to verify that flash is the problem here, but it seems likely. When it crashes for me, the message informs me that it caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV). Currently running gutsy, upgraded by a clean desktop CD install for everything except /home, which is a separate partition I kept unchanged. This also seems to be related to the older bug from hoary, Bug #16502.

I just received an update to konqueror-nsplugins for kubuntu feisty. Does this include the patch? If so, it didn't work for me. I installed the update, logged out and back in, loaded konqueror and went to www.scifi.com. No flash.

I have to add that someone seems have tried the *real* patch posted by me today but doesn't work... so have to wait more probably for a better one.

Did you uninstall gnash?

It turns out gnash is a selfish pile of bugs. It doesn't work to view flash,
but if it's anywhere on your system it totally hides any other flash player,
and won't even let programs like firefox _see_ it. You have to totally
remove it from the system in order for anything else to have a chance to
work.

Patch released. Still crashing in Gutsy. It appears that this is due to a change in how many newer Mozilla plug-ins work, not just Flash...

I can confirm 1000%, all flash player plugins, from (k)ubuntu downloads, and patch...etc AND even directly from adobe,
will Crash and Burn Konqueror every time I visted, a Flash based website.. youtube.com or veoh.com.. CRASH & BURN fault errors.
MAJOR FIRE

Please note: I've install flash 18 times... from different sources, Some gave the Check Sum errors,
but most installed, But would not pass the youtube.com and veoh.com acid test.

Well, it would Appear, That Konqueror in 7.10 needs a Major UPDATE, to deal with the more current media streams.

Great work, people!

Packages version as follows:
kdelibs -> 4:3.5.8-4ubuntu10
gtk-qt-engine -> 1:0.8-1ubuntu2
flashplugin-nonfree -> 9.0.115.0ubuntu4

I tested a bit more:
youtube works, but for example if you go to www.libero.it with firefox and with konqueror you will miss some flash parts... maybe has built-in ads removal? :)

For me, flash in konqueror is working again, big thanks to developers.
Youtube works for me, and about the www.libero.it - it looks the same in my konqueror and firefox (only in konq it has green background while white in firefox), the ads in both browsers are filtered out by adblock.

Isma (isma-af) wrote :

Mmm.. maybe I was too excited about youtube working, and thought that everything was right.
As I can see now, youtube (as well as youtube embeded videos) and many other flash sites are working again for me. About www.libero.it, it behaves the same in konqueror as in firefox.

However, I've found a place where youtube embedded video does render in firefox, while in konqueror all I have is a gray area. I link directly to the news page with the video:
http://www.20minutos.es/noticia/342357/0/maradona/mano/dios/

Maybe it has to do with the way the embed the video, and not with nspluginviewer working wrong, because in the same web site, the have a totally flash driven video section, which is working pretty well:

sorry but... OF COURSE if you block flash with a plugin then you cannot understand if it works or not :|

sorry, didn't make myself clear. some of the ads were filtered out (no all). Maybe you ad filters work differently. As proof attaching img where ad filters in both browsers are disabled. Left firefox, right konqueror.

I have Kubuntu 8.04 LTS (KDE 3.5.9) . Konqueror handles flash video erratically. Flash works flawlessly on some sites but on others like dailymotion or youtube, all I get are grey boxes with sound. Is this possibly related to http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-runtime/faq/webbrowser.html#id2558174 ?
9.13.
   Why does Konqueror display a plain grey square when I try to view flash animations, even though the flash plugin is installed?
   Under the latest versions of X.org, having the composite extension loaded can cause problems with the flash plugin. Try disabling the composite extension and see if normal flash operation is restored.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
