Bug Description

The backend for the Brother MFC needs merging into sane-backens. Unfortunately,
it requires being built in sane-backends, but has not been included in the
upstream version. There is a tarball available at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/brother-mfc

The package is called libsane-extras now, and according to http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/libs/libsane-extras, it contains the following backends:

  * epkowa (some EPSON scanners)
  * geniusvp2 (Genius ColorPage-Vivid Pro II)
  * hp_rts88xx (HP ScanJet 4400C, HP ScanJet 4470C)
  * hp3900 (HP ScanJet 3970C, HP ScanJet 4070, HP ScanJet 4370)

So, it hasn't been added to feisty yet.

Moving to crimsun, as this is an issue of the sane-nackends package. It has nothing to do with the printing infrastructure.

Hardy still does not have Brother sane-backend support (e.g. my copier MFC-8820D)

Will brother sane-backend make it to Intrepid either as a part of sane-backends package or as its own package?

I'm not the maintainer of this package, but I would hope that it will
be included in Intrepid.

I had plans to do it for intrepid but I think that I won't have sufficient time for it. However, maintainer or not, anybody can start working on this and create the package for intrepid. So if somebody wants to do it, your work will be welcome.

Is this for the scanner packaging of Brother drivers?

If so, I'd really like to get mentored to package them. I really need these packages and I think it would be a wonderful addition to Ubuntu to have these distribute by default.

Hi Brett Alton : There is actually no bug report open for scanner packaging for Brother devices. You can open one. I was actually the one who created packages for brother printer drivers (with a lot of help from Till Kamppeter and Martin Pitt). If you want to start packaging brother scanner drivers, you are welcome! Unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to assist you with that task and I didn't started to work on scanner drivers yet (as I'm very busy with other things, even the printer drivers suffer from a lack of update from me). However if I was you, I would start to play here :

The source code of the three existing brother scanner drivers :
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_src.html#src_s

The brother scanner drivers, already compiled, as a reference :

The ubuntu packaging guide :
